--> my father has had a wish for many many years, and that is to bring me and my brother to the states to drive route 66. his dream would be to buy an old convertible in new york, meet some family we have there, then go to boston, where we also have some family, and then drive to chicago and then route 66 to los angeles.

he is turning 70 in january, so me and my brother want to give him this trip for his birthday!! we are planning on spending maybe 14 days on the trip. and here comes the question; do you know any good em places along the route?

hehe just kidding. more serious; have any of you done this? whats smart? is it a nice trip? what needs to be done? and tips, advice, and so on?

thanks mang, great link

no idea whatsoever but that is a lovely gesture!! any room in the boot..*ahem* i mean trunk?

There's a fun guide by some Irish bikers that I've used to find attractions.

Plus WikiTravel is always good.

My meager advices:

Stop only in small towns. Except for Chicago, Santa Fe, and LA. But he probably knows that already.

Take some detours in Arizona. Everyone who visits the US shoud see the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon and pop music are the two most special things we have here. The Painted Desert is almost as amazing, as are the Petrified Forest & Meteor Crater.

Sunsceen & a hat. If you go in the summer, it will be really hot. I once tried to change a tire in Needles, CA when it was 50 °C--at sundown!

Have fun!

i've come close on tour many times, and the country is beautiful. it's crazy hot for parts of it, though, so make sure whatever convertible you buy has a bit of stamina. way to go! i'm jealous.

oh i am so sorry samski, i dont think you would fit:P
wow, otterfan, i knew about grand canyon but the painted desert and the forest and the crater i hadnt thought of. great! must be amazing to experience!
haha, yeah, i understand that it gets really hot in the desert. we were thinking about going in an old convertible but i rather think we should rent a modern airconditioned one

ha! viva la america

prugelknaben - this is a wonderful thing to do.

Regarding the heat, yes you really would be better off getting something with air conditioning. In an old car, you and your da will be miserably hot! Even coming from the northwest US, the heat is a real shock to me; it will likely be more difficult to adjust from a Norwegian climate.

I agree that you want to focus on small towns along the way, much more interesting, authentically "american" in a way than the big cities.
And also the cold. Camping in Arizona was one of the coldest nights I've ever camped... even though it was August and warm during the day... those crazy american deserts.

Sounds like a great trip!

you calling me a fat fuck prugel?

i have done it, only from ohio to la, its the best road trip. so much fun!!! the only thing i would suggest is not pushing to hard, say keep your driving days to around 10 hours, and try not to drive at night as after 8-9 hours, the dark gets to much, its just not fun you know. other then that, maybe carry some extra oil and radiator fluid as you will be driving through desert. bring a camera, lots of water, and maybe a tape recorder, my girl (at the time) and i did that and i am SO happy i did, so much fun listening to that later

have fun!!!

I haven't done this, but I just visited Albuquerque, and the part of 66 that runs through the city is now called Central Ave. There's a lot of cool old motels along the road, and Old Town Albuquerque is worth a stop, for all the tourist knicknacks. The 66 Diner is kind of fun for the old school '50s diner atmosphere and Pez dispenser collection, and Frontier REstuarant, across from UNM, has the best breakfast burritos and hash browns ever. Everything comes with green chile. Bring a camera, bring water, and bring a hat. I was dying in Albuquerque, but at least it wasn't as bad as Phoenix. Fuck Phoenix.

sounds like a really great brithday present.

have nothing useful to say, as i never visited the states.
hopes everything works as planned.

and i already say it in advance
pics or stfu

i am even more sure know that the best thing is to rent a new car. makes the whole driving experience so much better, and i started thinking about... first finding the right old car, then paying for it, and it would have to work and be reliable so it would cost us, AND we would have to insure it and i am not even sure that is possible to do, just coming in from norway and buying registering and insuring a car. AND AND selling a used car to someone knowing that we leave the country the day after --- no thanks. too much hassle. where is smart to rent a car? should i go with one of the big ones? avis, budget, hertz, something like that? what car would be nice? a big suv, or a new comfy convertible?

samski, by no means, its just my boot is really tiny:P

thanks for the advice everybody! yes yoghurt i will take pics! lots!

airliner, i have always wanted to go to albuerquerque. its just such a weird name. yeah, we definitely have to get our share of diners and roadside motels.

yeah, claudia, we definitely want to take our time. i understand 14 days should be enough? then you can relax a little bit at cool places. i really want to go to vegas, too, and see that new beatles/cirque de soleil production down there.

car rental is definitely the way to go! Buy the supplemental accident insurance, no matter who you rent with. I recently rented a van for work from Enterprise in LA. I crashed it. They didn't even care--in fact, they told me that since I bought the supplemental insurance, I could have destroyed the car completely or it could have been stolen and it wouldn't have mattered!

For a few weeks' trip the rental will get spendy, but at least you can easily return it when you're done with it.

SUV? Naw, too huge and gas will cost you. Get a roomy sedan so you can stretch your legs and so that driving won't get too uncomfortable.
