--> hello...

further to my last blog link about a job i'm applying for working with young people running a studio, i need some help.

The job spec requires me to be proficient with Cubase SX on the mac. I will be tested on this in the interview. The problem is that, er, i've never used it. I use FL studio, Vegas Video, Soundoforge, etc. I tried Cubase about 5 yrs ago and stuck with vegas. I also use PC not mac.

My training options are ok though. I've got a copy of Cubase Lite (or something) that came with my H4 recorder. How similar is this? will it teach me the basics? Also, my girlfirend has an i-mac so maybe i can install it on there? (not sure if both versions are on the disk)

Alternatively, is there some sort of legit 30 day trial of cubase SX? i've not had chance to look yet. The interview's in less than a month s that's all the time i'd need.

What are the first tricks i need to learn?
What should i know to make me look more practiced at it than i already am?
I'm pretty comfortable with both vegas and FL, so are there any major differences in functioning that might trip me up?

thanks!

heres some basic tutes: link

I have the Ask DVD series for SX3 at home somewhere - emmail me your address and I'll burn a copy and stick it in the post.

zanf is such a gent. um, i dunno what copy of cubase you have there but cubase studio 4 (which is the lite version) is generally considered very similar to cubase 4. Do you know what version of cubase? I've not used 4 yet - just bought it - but it is meant to be quite a diffrent workflow to SX3. Hope that helps a wee bit. I'd be fudged if someone asked me for cubase experience, as i have loads of my own keyboard shortcuts setup...which would make me look like a willy in a cubase test on another mahine

good luck.

Also, heres some videos on googleVids: link

zoom website said: "H4 comes bundled with Cubase LE, the perfect 48-Track Digital Audio Workstation for easy editing, mixing and mastering of your recordings on either Windows or Mac."

Is that any good?

Its ok - its got a few features locked out where its the entry level version - same sort of thing as ableton lite that comes bundled with controllers & soundcards.

does it work in the same way as SX though?
could i practice on LE and look like i know what i'm doing with SX?
cos that would be ideal...

cubase studio 4 is basically cubase sl 3 with some new instruments and "instrument tracks", basically a bundle of midi track + vst instrument. I still prefer regular midi tracks routed to instruments, because then I can route the track to wherever without any baggage.

good clarifying crabster
but could i practice on LE and look like i know what i'm doing with SX?

SX is what they asked for i think...

Analog: I've never used LE, but it can't imagine it hurting your chances.

it seems that nobody is answering your actual question.

ok... here it goes.
I own Cubase LE (yes, for Mac)
I also work with Cubase SX (ver. 1 - not ver. 3) in another studio.
To me, LE and SX are laid out pretty much exactly. The only major difference I have seen is the Mixer has EQ controls on the SX and NOT of the LE version. You can still get to the EQ via the "E" button (next to the faders) in both versions though.
I am sure that there are a few other visual differences, but I haven't run across them.
I would say that for the majority of what you are doing and / or for the general user wants to do, you can learn on LE and feel good about jumping into SX and knowing whats going on.

Brilliant, cheers for that.
Now i know i've got pretty much all i need to learn the shizzle.
I'll let you kknow how i get on!

When in doubt, hit a random key and say "oh, I have it keymapped that way in the studio... whats your keyboard shortcut for loop selection?"

I was pretty suprised to see how similar SX1 and LE3 were.... just like scu.

Also, i firmly believe that the LEAST important skill you could have coming in to run a studio for teens would be proficiency in one type of software.
Unless your job is to BE a recording engineer.

Digital audio, yes. Recording studio knowledge, yes. Teaching ability and speaking ability, yes. I teach teens using REason and DP. I know some Reason, I know enough DP to get by.... and 99% of the time the problems I am working with the kids are "why doesn't my computer make any sound" and "why is my recording so quiet/distorted?" and the like.

Quickly being able to tempo-slice a track, quantize it to a groove tempo, duplicate it, reverse it, add reverb, re-reverse it then hit normalize? Not such an important skill for a teacher. With hotkeys, I can do that in 5 seconds in CUbase.... but so what!

I think knowing when and how to introduce a young engineer to the concept of Compression is a better skill.

The skill I need to learn: where to download "instros" and "acapellas". I'm not into those, but many of the kids are.

And doese LE3 do all that? I've had SX1 for ages and have never figured out how to do all that in 5 seconds.
