--> Where are they? The concept is an anomaly to me. I know of one ( I hope she's here!) but that's about it. Others I might know are guitarists or cellists that are OPEN to noise so they invite a MALE noise-technician. I had a thought a couple months ago that I should open up a techno/noise school for women to debunk the Male noise stereotype. But I'm a guy and can't force this type of thing to happen simply because I will it. I just... I hated that time that I played a set in the Natural Canvas (back when it had shows, before the Planet came and went) and I played for a dozen and a half MEN. I don't want to just entertain, I want to fall in love...

most girls are turned off by this music. there was this little chineese girl that is the daughter of the owner of a restaurant that is nextdoor to my fav cd store. she's about 6 and hangs out in there alot. I let her listen to some autchre and she said
"ugh this sounds like ugly boy noises!"
when I asked her what she listened to, she said "pretty girl music"
...so go figure. I don't know where they are.

you should replace the word "steretype" in your post with "pretty much the truth"
experimental EM is a total sausage party.

Iris Garrelfs is quite active in London. Shes one half of the pair who put on the immensely successful "Sprawl" [an experiemental/noise club that has run for 11 years in London].

Shes not active on this site though but her home is here: link

here's a film about women in experimental music: link

Kim Gordon, Marina Rosenfeld, Kaffe Matthews, Can't (Jessica Rylan), Olivia Block, O.Blaat, Elaine Radigue, and one of the best acousmastic/'noise' records to come out in recent years was 2005's 'Before The Libretto' by the Lappetites, aka Eliane Radigue, Kaffe Matthews, Ryoko Kuwajima, and Antye Greye. link

There's the 'woman take back the noise' comp here: link

I agree that the ratio seems to be tipped towards men in experimental music, but it's really not as bad as you're making it seem. There are tons of woman in the field, many of whom are doing some of the most vital and original work out there right now in my opinion. See above for name-dropping.

I'm fascinated by this topic. A huge majority of electronic music does seem to be made by men. This site seems even more male dominated. Are there any women EM411ers other than Lara? I can't think of what cultural elements might have lead to this.

My wife does theater, an art with gender ratios inverse to those of EM. It's actually really hard to find decent male actors, because there aren't very many. Of course, all of the larger repertory theaters are dominated by men, a sad reminder that sexism persists. And more generally, it's another obnoxious instance of a minority group holding a disproportionately large share of power.

Why don't I give a shit about making theater? Why isn't my wife into making EM? Are there any cultural or personality similarities between men that do make theater? What about women making EM?

And Ronen, if you want to put yourself around a LOT of young women, try to get involved with local fringe theater or dance. You could offer to do sound design for a show.

im confused by the term "noise".

does that mean droney, fuzz, distortion noise?
or anything a bit loud?

i think the word "noise" gets thrown around too much.

yeah, i find noise to be a bit of a grey area too. i personally think it's option a, but i have heard a lot of option b described as it.
and women are around making music, but it's true there are less. nobody knows why..... i don't think it's one of those things that can easily be explained.

i kNOW!!! IT'S BECAUSE WOMEN ARE LAZY!!!!!

JUST KIDDING PLEASE.....

I think it's because as a whole women are more into experimenting with and redefining identity or self, and men are more into experimenting with STUFF. probably just as much or more cultural as biological.

it seems like writiing is one of those rare fields where the gender ratios are pretty level, and I think it qualifies as both.

but music is an expression of self, and laptops have made the "stuff" not as necessary.....

music is most definitely an expression of self. but that has a different meaning and context for different people, and specifically to this discussion, women and men. there are things that either sex as a whole appreciates more, takes for granted and goes without mention, argues about, etc. I think the differences, as you said, are not easily explained and are subtle. they're more quiet overtones than completely different scales.

the stuff still exists, it's just in software/data form for most people now.

men = toys, sadly one gender stereotype that is completely, totally true. Frn's got it though that computerization has made the requisite gadget / stuff whoring for creating music far less a requirement than it's ever been.

I know a lot of women photographers, and photog is totally a stuff-driven art, so it's not a blanket characterization that quite works.

well we are all pretty nutty about stuff. capitalism and advertising obviously has something to do with that. that's a whole other discussion. or is it?

and yeah blanket characterizations almost never quite work. there's always an exception.

as far as computerization, the sheer number of youtube videos of boys drumming on their new MPCs, stringing together circuit bent junk, playing custom controllers for their reaktor patches, I think tells us that us Y chromosome owners are still mesmerized by neat-o physical toys. they may not be getting as much use but they're not appreciated less. someone performing with a drum machine and a delay pedal, or 2 turntables, or an MPC, or a drumkit, is still going to get respected more than someone generating the same waveform with a snazzy new Dell.
