He will be fingerprinted and photographed on the way in. He will need to have a biometric passport and if he has any kind of previosu then he will be turned back.

If he doesnt have a biometric passport then he cannot be exempt of a visa under the waiver program. If he needs to sort a visa then expect a lot of legwork

You might find our visa laws draconian, but they do a great job of keeping out international terrorists like Lilly Allen.

whoopsie...no edit : link

what a joke! the USA is crazy.

do you really need to deal w/the visa if you aren't famous or on a 2 month tour? srsly? can't you just say you are a tourist? i guess if you spit on the sidewalk in your native country when you were 12 or got detention in middle school then you're gonna get held up at customs for a few hours while they make sure you aren't a threat.... ;)

you could always fly in to tijuana and then walk into san diego in the desert.

i agree with ignatius - i don't think a work visa is worth the hassle. it wasn't until i got married that i really understood how shit, bigoted and nosey the immigration authorities are in the UK.

I don't know anything about the US, but I know that musicians going to the UK sometimes get nabbed at immigration if they don't have a work permit and they seem to be carrying a conspicuous amount of gear. I think Lightning Bolt got nabbed that way in Japan.

If all he's carrying in is a laptop and an electribe, he could probably get away with telling immigration he's visiting for sun and relaxation. If he's got a lot of stuff, they're probably going to figure out that he's a touring musician, in which case he'll either have to prove that he's not going to make any money (and no, just being a musician does not prove that you won't be making any money) or have a visa.

Canadians get P2 Exchange Artist Visas. UKians are probably another matter altogether...

it's the job of the promoters of the show to book the visa, not your friend. in fact, he *can't* apply for the visa, the promoters (aka the sponsor or the petitioner) have to - they have to do it three to four months in advance as well, apparently it takes no more than 100 days and no less than 60, and if you screw up the application in any way they just reject it and you have to apply again. it's easy to screw up, too - the pages have to be two-hole punched and printed on landscape paper and other weird shit like that.

it's not a simple and easy process, even for the P2-class.

u could always boycott coming to the united states. that's what im doing.

I don't know one damn thing about us visas, but I recently have met some really cool people that I'm very pissed that their visas are going to expire soon. Its a shame some one can't just prove they have a legal job and support them selves in order to be in any country.

i think hes not gonna bother with visa. ;-)
will let you know how it goes.
