aw, I was looking forward to a race relations debate...
yeah that sucks though - what if you were to take your research to the store there and ask if they'd match the price?
sometimes they will be willing to take a slightly lower profit if the alternative is no profit at all. I say negotiate, and always be ready to walk away.

We have the same here in the UK - things are so much more expensive than the US and even resell values are ridiculous.
I saved about 1/3rd because I got an eventide shipped over from the us to if I bought one here 2nd hand.

if you're smart you'll just buy all your stuff from the us and have it shipped to the uk. it's not price discrepancies, it's just that the pound and euro are kicking the crap out of the dollar right now. our economic strife is your online ordering dream! enjoy!

There are a lot of reasons for the difference.
US stores have a market of over 300 million. That lets stores order in bulk. There's also greater competition, since we've got four certified elektron dealers here.
Probably the biggest part is labor cost though. US retailers are notorious for not paying decent wages or providing health/pension benefits. Other countries have to pay into national health and pension for every employee, plus 4~5 weeks of vacation and other goodies. We get none of that.
Personally I'd pay the extra $$$ if it would cut the $500+ a month I spend out of pocket for health insurance/medicine.

I think the main thing is that asia+oceania aren't as cool as the west, and deserve to be punished.
