--> So I decide I'll buy myself a monomachine. Novamusik is selling them for $1300, sounds good to me.

Then I realise it has an AC adapter. . which i'll have to replace if I import it into australia. all good - I ought to be able to source one but its a pain.

So I look up the australian store that stocks elektron gear..

lo and behold the price is AU$1900 .. that's almost US$1600

the replacement power supply & shipping from the US wont cost more than about US$120

so it ends up being:
order from US: US$1420
order from australia: US$1600

This makes no sense to me. . how can the price be justified - especially when it can be ordered frmo overseas for much cheaper?

It's not just elektron gear, even the humble electribe costs an absurd amount more here.

aw, I was looking forward to a race relations debate...
yeah that sucks though - what if you were to take your research to the store there and ask if they'd match the price?
sometimes they will be willing to take a slightly lower profit if the alternative is no profit at all. I say negotiate, and always be ready to walk away.

We have the same here in the UK - things are so much more expensive than the US and even resell values are ridiculous.

I saved about 1/3rd because I got an eventide shipped over from the us to if I bought one here 2nd hand.

if you're smart you'll just buy all your stuff from the us and have it shipped to the uk. it's not price discrepancies, it's just that the pound and euro are kicking the crap out of the dollar right now. our economic strife is your online ordering dream! enjoy!

There are a lot of reasons for the difference.

US stores have a market of over 300 million. That lets stores order in bulk. There's also greater competition, since we've got four certified elektron dealers here.

Probably the biggest part is labor cost though. US retailers are notorious for not paying decent wages or providing health/pension benefits. Other countries have to pay into national health and pension for every employee, plus 4~5 weeks of vacation and other goodies. We get none of that.

Personally I'd pay the extra $$$ if it would cut the $500+ a month I spend out of pocket for health insurance/medicine.

^ Yeah thats a fair point otterfan...

The other reason I'd rather buy from my own country is if anything goes wrong, the cost & hassle to return the item to the US would make up for the difference in price... damn I think they've got me beat on this one

I think the main thing is that asia+oceania aren't as cool as the west, and deserve to be punished.

My cousin lived in australia for a year or two- he complained about that same thing. He said that local rock bands had even crappier gear than they have here- and all he could afford was a really, really crappy guitar.
Of course, I think that sounds awesome.
I didn't realize that Australia only had 20 million people. I think its hilarious and horrible that your official state census divides these people up into:
Males
9,799,252

Females
10,056,036

Indigenous persons (comprises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander)
455,031

Lol I guess the "indigenous persons" could all be hermaphrodites, but still, thats just mean.
