--> I haven`t posted on here for a long time, but i had to tell people who would understand my excitement.

I recently moved to Japan to work for at least a year. I am working a public highschool about an hour away from the outskirts of Tokyo by train. So far everything has been great and the people are nice. My Japanese is still quite limited; I have a fairly wide vocabulary which helps me to understand what others are talking about but lack knowledge of grammar.

Currently, most of the students at my school are on summer vacation and whilst many students still come in to study or practice sports or music the teachers have a lot of time on their hands. One thing they did recently was clean out the language lab and throw away a load of equipment that they didn`t think they needed anymore. After inspecting what they considered to be trash i asked my supervisor if i could take any of it home. The answer was pretty much along the lines of "anything you can carry".

So here is what i grabbed:

A Yamaha stereo graphic EQ

A Sony rackmount stereo graphic EQ

A Tascam rackmount compressor limiter.

A large fostex mixer.

A larger fostex tape 4 track.

A Yamaha proffesional series amplifier.

A Yamaha spx900 rack mount effects unit.

Some sort of rackmount clean line distrubutor to plug them all in at once.

They are all a little dirty but as far as i know they are all in near new condition and have seen very little loose. I can hear a screw rattling around in the compressor so i will have to open that up to have a look before i switch it on.

I am guessing i really won`t need most of it so after i have cleaned them up and checked they are working its off to the second hand store :‚O)

Anyway they are also going to can a Sony rackmount DAT machine but i haven`t got any experience with DAT and don`t know whether worth my trouble. Any thoughts?

DAT kind of sucks nowadays...if you mixdown to the computer, it would probably be better

But congrats on all those finds...have fun with the spx!

hell yeah dude. you cleaned up, pun intended

Awesome. Sweet score!

dats are good if you can find the tapes, i used to like the quality, maybe good for just letting the tape run jam sessions.

DAT = Dead Audio Tape

I must say, the tape part of DAT is useless in this age of PC.
But the meter on the machine is very sweet.
You can connect spdif and use it just for the meter.
I find it useful when I do mixing and mastering...

you could send the DAT player to me..

been wanting to get one so I can get all my stepdad's band recordings off his old dats and give them to him on cd for his b'day

get out of dasaitama and get into tokyo dude.

let me show you where the action is at

i did that ALT gig too. i lasted for 3 weeks before i canned it. good work on the gear tho!

congrats on the SPX... i want one

Actually i am really enjoying the ALT job at the moment Skab :p

I am thinking to clean most of the gear up and test it out and keep some and take the rest down to softmap in akihabara (sp?). Is there a better store in the Tokyo region for selling off some of this gear?

I am thinking to use the proceeds to help pay for a new mac since i have come without a computer and logic audio is not very fun when all you have is the box.

wicked score... DATS are good for metering and the odd routing if need be. I wouldn't bother with recording with them a real lot. I have a few DATS from the mid90s that are basically fuxxered.

Cool, I'm in Tokyo as well.
Tokyo dudes:
I am a judge at the first Tokyo Laptop Battle, Sept. 12.

Come out and say hello! It's at Superdeluxe, which is a cool spot in Roppongi. Should be cool.

HKHK - sofmap will probably give you f*ckall for the gear - as will most places in tokyo. you're far better off joining yahoo auctions

good luck with selling the stuff, akihabara is a good place to go to buy a mac tho - there are some backstreet places off the main drag which offer better deals than yodobashi camera and the like. shoot me an emmail if you need a guide
