--> It's been a year since my quest into music switched from something id muck around with maybe once a fortnight for an hour or so to being a devouring passion...

But I'm no closer to finishing a track .. I've got a few halfway there ones. . my synthesis abilities are much greater, but I've still got jack to show of it all.

I'm starting to see why it is that the internet is in fact the most horrible invention on earth..

I want to go and sell my computer, but I cant because its a 21st gift I was given, so Im stuck, with internet following me everywhere I go

I think I am actually one of those internet addicts. . i have to check . . then refresh 5mins later to see if anythings changed!

It doesnt help that every morning I'm presented with a new array of items to GAS over, another thing that has ultimately led to my downfall. . being a hardware junky aint easy. .. I keep switching sequencers, synths, samplers, etc etc.

Just sold it all, and yes. . you will see my last blog. . proclaiming i had found an answer. . well I was wrong. again. :p Twice an idiot.

I just ordered a DSI desktop evolver and an MPC500, I still have a fair pile of money left over, but I'm not buying ANYTHING. . not even a polyphonic synthesiser.

Still need to figure out a way to stop myself from wasting time online. . any ideas? I still need email and stuff so i cant cut it off completely.

Anyone dealt with and solved this problem somehow? I've taken a year off uni and want to make the most of it, but already a month is gone and nothing to show.

An electro shock system connected to your mouse.

haha... skiptracer did the self ban. Try it!

how's the Evolver Desky treating you btw?

it's not arrived yet... im hoping tomorrow

im gonna wait and play with it for at least a month or two before i go spending my remaining money on another synth - probbly the first bit of self control I've ever had with music gear

this sounds pretty familiar. I put all my hardware in the closet except the turntables and the 4 track and told myself that I'm taking a break. it's made me feel a lot less anxious and guilty about it.

only problem is that now I just want to use software, and yesterday I got this idea that I should sell all my more expensive hardware and then reward myself when I get a job by getting an MPC1000. so actually it sounds like you are a couple steps ahead of me...haha. it sounds like your MPC hasn't come yet, but it seems like they are great for ease of use and quick composing, and so would naturally keep you from being distracted - maybe that will help?

so my GAS has returned somewhat, but it's nice to not think about MIDI and audio configurations everytime I sit down at the computer.

and yeah the internet is evil. only thing I can think of is disconnecting it, or going into your router and setting network access hours or something. self-restriction, self-discipline is good.

Set some rules for yourself. Post a song here every 2 weeks. I'm serious, a new song, bi-weekly. Sure they won't all be great, but it will teach you discipline and help you overcome any preciousness you have about your music.

Oh, and if you want to be hardcore, do a song a week.

^yeah the MPC is not here yet either. . that'll probably come early next week (ordered from overseas since for some reason australia has a few hundred $ markup on all audio gear..)

Thats why i sold it all for a single synth and a sequencer/sampler in one. .. The less I have to choose from / worry about, the more time i can spend just jamming about with it and starting to get basics down for songs - I dont care now whether theyre gonna be perfect from the get go .. its just the arrangement and basically getting stuff DONE that is important to me now - theres no way ill be releasing records within say, a year, or even alot more than that - so for now, a more immediate & simple setup is going to be more valuable to me than having loads of rack gear all hooked up, trying to get 'perfect' effects, mixing, etc.. . screw all that for now. . just gonna make some tracks that i have fun with at home.
- I think these days, because of the accumulated knowledge in music production, we have alot higher standards to achieve than say, in the early 90s, when everyone was new to electronica. . so now we're trying to be more ambitious right from the beginning - trying to sound like artists who've been at it for near 20 years, when really that's an unrealistic goal, to be able to hold all that together right from the start.

Setting network access hours sounds like a pretty good idea. . might look into that one
if you have more fun on the internet than writing music, so what?

Is there a reason you NEED to finish a song? Are you on a contract? Are there club membership dues?

Do what you enjoy doing.

Classic - whining about internet addiction in a blog!!! ;)

Its all about the self control - I have one PC for music only and my laptop I use for all else so I either have one or the other switched on.

btw, I havent finished anything for about a year or more.

practice. get a clock that you can count down an hour with and make yourself do hour-long chunks where you don't look at the internet.

then, when you get the hang of that, write out a practice schedule. it might look like this-

first hour-make tones, a bass, a lead, and four seuqences
second hour-make the skeleton of a song using the stuff from hour one. it has to be four minutes long, and have three parts
third hour-write the beats
fourth hour-listen and tweak, have fun

during those times, make sure you don't do anything else. at most, take a five minute break to step outside or take a piss. but the important thing is to make sure you get that hour long chunk each time. an hour is a good amount of time to sit down, initiate to the task, get into it, take a short break, and then wrap it up.

long term goals aren't gonna matter at all until you learn how to get your ass in the seat and stay there until something gets done. after you get used to putting in a good 3-12 hours solid every goddamn day, without thinking you need anything else (gear or lack of internet or whatever), then you can assess yourself and come up with some goals you can reach.

asstoy, that sounds like work... who wants to work?

What he said.

I also find that setting deadlines with consequences helps. Try to book a show somewhere 6-8 weeks from now. Anywhere you won't need a demo or a reputation--coffee shop, house party, etc. Now if you don't get shit done you'll look like an ass.

Inspiration.

work? That sounds like Obsessive Compulsive Syndrome.

If you write music like that, next thing you know you are going to feel that anything less than 22-hours worth of programming on a Nord Modular is too simple.

I blieve you have my red patch cord. My red patch cord, I need it.

your synthesis abilities improving IS something to show for it
