Nice timing, j_chot.
The guy had a miraculous voice. My mother used to listen to "una fortiva lachrima" over and over singing along (that was the unfortunate part!) I have really never liked the sound of an opera voice. It usually sounds so false and so primped and pulled. At least the tenor voice. But Pavarotti's voice is silky, effortless, naturally powerful. He was truly gifted with a very rare and beautiful voice.

Beverly Sills, then Pavarotti.
Bad year for opera singers.

Beverly Sills died! Wow, crazy culture loss lately. All the old school artists are slipping off.

The sad thing is that I don't see artists with outsize personalities who will replace them.
There are lots of good repertory singers who are great, but not with the same amount of warmth and vitality and personality. Jane Eglund is one. I can't think of another opera "superstar" at the moment.
Cello has the same problem - Janos Starker is the last of the great tremendous cellists of his generation, since Rostropovich is gone...

In addition to that great voice, nobody enunciates Italian like Pav did. Those 3 Tenors concerts, blah as they may have been musically (and unfortunately smoothed the way for those Divo guys), sure got a lot of people into opera. But there will be more.
Is di Stephano still alive? IMO he had an even better, more nuanced voice. Anyway, though Pav wasn't doing a lot these last few years, his immense presence will be missed. At least we have decent recordings.
RIP, Pav.
