--> I acquired an Alesis DM-5 from a friend a while back, always with the intention of doing something with the trigger inputs. I never quite got aorund to buying a set of drum pads, though, and to be completely honest I am a lousy, lousy drummer. And I don't have a ton of room for a full kit, either.

I tried building some pads out of practice pads but ran into some mounting problems - they worked great but took up a lot of room. That wasn't going to work.

But I always thought of that weird sample trigger thing that Depeche Mode showed off in "101" and thought it would be really cool to have something like that, either for live or just for quick banging around in the studio.

So a few trips to radio shack and the hardware store and some clumsy solder joints later (I suck at soldering) I had a bunch of tubular drum triggers mounted on a single cymbal stand. They work pretty well - they're not 100% great or super-sensitive, and real drummers may be a bit annoyed with their lack of sensitivity, but for someone like me, who just wants to do some rough banging about with sticks, it works pretty well.

And the best part, they ended up costing about $10 per trigger.

I doucmented and photographed the construction process, if anyone wants to try their hand at making, and hopefully improving, them.

Neato!

I sound like Butters

Very cool, maybe I can hook something like this up to my TD-6...

i'm having trouble picturing the final product, more photos? in-use would be ideal. is that thing hanging? when you strike the pipe does it wobble about?

in any case, great work!!

there's also this. Dunno if its actually out yet tho.

oops, ignore. wrong thread

I don't have any in-use pictures yet, because...well, I can't play and photograph at the same time.

It's just mounted on a cymbal stand. It's basically some tubes sticking out from the stand at whatever angles I feel like putting them at. Smack on 'em with drumsticks, they send trigger input to the DM-5, which then does MIDI-out to my sampler.

you might consider using laboratory clamps to lower costs.
I have a whole box I got from a dumpster. I want to make some of these now. omg . . . i love DIY articles like this. peeing pants now.

sorry. i looked closer and saw the quality aluminum machined clamps are real fancy.
someone who didn't care about looks could use steel pipe and generic construction clamps
I was just remembering how we use Strut with "T"s, clamps and strut nuts for theater lighting, solar installs, etc.
This method is cheap and readily available from hardware stores.

why can't i edit posts? link example strut nuts and clamps.
