--> VIENNA, Austria (AP) — Jazz legend Joe Zawinul, who soared to fame as one of the creators of jazz fusion and performed and recorded with Miles Davis, died early Tuesday, a hospital official said. He was 75.

Zawinul had been hospitalized since last month. A spokeswoman for Vienna's Wilhelmina Clinic confirmed his death without giving details.

Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Davis albums such as "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew," and was a leading force behind the so-called "Electric Jazz" movement.

too f'ing young if you ask me.

i garantee a few of us will live past 65.

truly a loss. i have a jazz dj night every sunday and he's a staple.

he was that guy in the that pic playing 2 arps right?

yea.. djugel just remember, joe zawinal = 2 arps, john mclaughlin = 2 sg's

you have to be able to play at least 2 instruments at once if you want to make good fusion.

haha!

I can't really say I've really heard him .. I bet I have but don't remember. Is he a noodle-synth player? or a melodic and bold?

check out pharaoh's dance (first track on bitches brew) to hear a great example of his playing and composition.

Aw, shit I was just getting into the first Weather Report album the other day. First Roach, now Joe. Bummer.

Zawilnul Played the Arp2600 in the most organic way possible.

In his hands it didn't sound like a synth at all. It sounded like a living organism that came in from the forest to jam.

He was the best at that.
