Portland Visit- what should I see?

HAY GUYS.
I'm gonna be flying in to Portland to have a peek around- OCT 12-15. What should I see?
And whats this business about the shanghai tunnels? and Does the Tri-met run 24/7?
We're thinking about getting a week pass on the tri-met and just cruising around to see all the neighborhoods and maybe burbs, etc.
I want your ideas!

tri met doesn't run 24/7 - I think it stops at 12 or so at night.
Definitely check oot teh chinese garden - largest of its kind in the US - the tour is really very interesting.
Check out alberta, mississippi corridor, hawthorne, belmont neighborhoods as well as the ones further north.

Powell's books! That is, the big store, not the satellite stores (although the Books For Cooks store on Hawthorne is pretty dope)
Tri-Met is a good idea! Some of the trains and buses run until 1am or so, but most are done by midnight as roshi says

just remember that tri-met (bus, trolley, max) is free in fairless square which is most of downtown/pearl district/museum district.
portland is a great place to walk around so don't be afraid to just wander aimlessly all over downtown to the waterfront etc. as roshi says.. alberta, mississippi, belmont (anthem records is on 34th i think).
so many places to eat and drink. where are you staying???
the portland rose garden (near the zoo) + the surrounding forest park. the pittock mansion is pretty cool too. even if you don't pay the fee to go in you can still walk around the back and check out the grounds and the awesome views of portland/mt hood. it's really great even on a cloudy day.

oh.. and of course go to powell's books and wander. it's huge and they have a pretty good coffee shop and accross the street is mio-gellato which has some damn tasty chocolate hazelnut gellato. so good.
also, near chinatown on couch and i think 4th or 5th is the compound gallery and accross the street is upper playground. both places have awesome exhibits regularly and are free.. they both sell t-shirts and the compound gallery has all kinds of japanese pop culture stuff.. nikes and robots and a well stocked DVD collection + very cool books and magazines... and they are both right next to ground kontrol. retro arcade

check the portland area board here to see what's going on. there's usually something at pi-rem, holocene worth checking out and there's a million bands playing everywhere all the time.
ill be out of town until the 13th but will be happy to meet up for drinks or something if there's an em meet someplace.

I'd be delighted to go have dinner with some people, where should we go?
And I'll be staying at a Rodeway Inn on NE Sandy near the airport. I hear its "not a nice part of town." But the owners are crazy christians that give away free frufru drinks from their adjoined coffee shop and free pastries to people who stay at the hotel. So for $55 that can't be beat! This is a LOW budget trip, lol.
Should I just buy a week pass for the Tri-met, or should we pay as we go? Does the tri-met take plastic or cash only?

oh oh... not the rodeway inn!!??
just kidding, I've only been to portland once, so am not much help.
Only advice I can give, YES, get the pass. A great way to see a city is take the public transport around and feel free to just get off and walk around when a place looks interesting.

Am I right that it'll be no big deal getting around the city without a rental car? Seems like the city has the most elaborate mass transit system I've ever seen! We're hoping to just get a map and go poke around, like you said.

ah shit... portland is small but you will be staying on the far edge of town. the public transport system is decent but not great.
there are super deals on rental cars from time to time... it could be a good idea to check it out. it might not be too much more than a trimet pass.

#12 goes right into downtown/pearl (or you can transfer to MAX/light rail), but it will probably be at least a 40-45 minute ride in. For NE and north portland you can transfer at Rose Quarter most places - including parts of N portland. It is doable from parkrose, but it's pretty far out. Also, transit on weekends can be sparse - especially on sundays.
Enterprise has some good deals for rentals, depending when you check.

Also, LOL, rodeway can't be nearly as bad as SeaTac (town around seattle/tacoma airport).
We were staying at a hotel there and one morning the police were surrounding this one hotel room saying "come out earl, we don't want any trouble, earl..." before busting the door open. Good times.

The hotel we're staying at is right next to a Max stop, do you think we'd still have a good time without a car? I'm really trying to avoid the cost, as I'm 24 and finding them to be marked up pretty hard. Also, I don't want to deal with parking and getting lost, that sort of thing.

Rental car places are infuriating- at 24 years old it costs me $155 to rent a car for 5 days. At 25 years old, it only costs $88. I have a 100,000 mi of accident free driving, good credit, been married for 3 years, and i get a worse price than a 25 yr old with a DUI and a felony. Wow.
I've always heard this, but I can't believe it now that somebody's doing it to me!

the villageballroom.com (upstairs) is run by my friends and the records store owner had a serious
motorcycle wreck. i loved that bike. i think he'll be out of commission for a little bit.
