Oh jesus, the label has got me into my very first festival. Thought I would announce it here as it's in Europe and I know many folks from Europe. If you can make it it would be so much fun to see you there...

I'll be playing at the Transmusicale festival in Rennes, France on December 6th, in the Parc Expo Hall 4. I have no idea, nor do I want to, how large a crowd there will be. Hopefully this will be one of the smaller exhibition spaces, because thoughts of this event fill me with nausea, shivers and also a solid dose of real excitement.
The fact of the matter is that I have only performed twice so far, so I will be working my ass off to find some gigs between now and then. I think I need at least 6 to feel comfortable doing this. Good grief!
Also, I am following a band called "The View" who sound to be a bit Punk. UGH! What were they thinking? So any ideas of what song I should start to follow this would be much appreciated, any of you who know my music. Or even just some abstract advice like... start with a really fast one, or do the opposite, start with your softest...
I'm going to try to get the time info from my manager and update this blog. Hope to see some of you there!

great news fredo! I wouldn't worry about following The View, my band played with them in Glasgow last year and they were terrible! i couldn't believe it a few months later when i started seeing them all over the press. you could open your show with the sound of yourself vomiting and it would sound better than them.

Hehe, thanks tmns! That makes me feel a little more confident. The thing I'm most worried about is what is The View's audience going to think of my music! I don't have enough of a following at this point to fill the theatre I think. Pretty much I'm a total unknown so will have to rely on the audience that have shown up for the music before and after me. What follows me is like a worldmusic/hiphop amalgamation, so I think I probably will go over pretty ok with them maybe. But Punk.. man, I don't got no songs to follow punk! MAYBE The Original Man.

that's one of the things i hate about gigging, you rarely get placed alongside bands you have anything in common with musically. you gotta just forget about it, do your thing and be confident in it.

Mr. Viola, do not be afraid. Concentrate solely on your music. Find someone in the audience to sing to. Concentrate on this alone. It will go fine. (Plus if you practice hard before the show it will go better, so get to work!)

fredo that's amazing. totally nuts. congrats man.
and please dont be nervous (easier said than done, i know) but you really don't need to be. all stuff i have ever heard from you is so fucking beautiful and you are really a great musicians. so better be proud of yourself and avoid drowning in question your stage appearance. it will be fun. don't waste a single thought about all that bullshit „the view“ band. they sucks so fucking much. you will pwn these wankers.

Thanks, yeah, I'm going to try to just immerse myself in shows... my manager is trying to set me up with some agents in nyc to set up something at Knitting Factory or Joe's Pub, but in the meantime, I'm going to seek out some open mics and maybe even do some karaoke. I just need to get used to looking my audience square in the eye. The advice I got from folks at em411 recently was really good and I have been thinking so much about the idea of finding one person in the audience who looks like they are truly bringing themselves to it and giving it to them good. ;)

Im sure this will be a great thing for you, fredo!
In a festival environment, you never know who's gonna be there. So its not like you're opening or closing their show. Probably half the crowd will leave and get a beer while the other half will be like "thank god somebody better is playing"
You'll be getting your music out to a lot of people- got a booth selling CDs and that sort of thing?

well, any sales profits go straight away to the label as I haven't recouped my advance and possibly will not with this first release. I will ask my manager about tshirts though because supposedly those we have a solid split on or something... I am not sure this is the kind of thing that's done at a festival, especially when you is unknown. What do you think? Do you have many festival experiences?

Merch is what artists live and die by...I'd say go for it.
Yeah, definitely try and book smaller gigs first...I looked at a few of mine as practice, and was actually relieved when very few people showed up.
But I'm sure you will be great!

congrats!
festivals are great fun. I've always found the vibe to be different than your typical gig. you get a wider cross section of folks there, so you'll definitely meet people and make some connections.
sort of like a condensed tour...unlike most club gigs, at festivals you've got people doing more travelling to get there. it's nice to bring free stuff to give out to people that seem sincere (some cdrs, perhaps).

Throw yourself into the performance or youll end up being the Britney Spears of em411. ;)
Look at it like this:
There are some people in life who have a natural talent for fucking things up. Anything they touch goes to complete shit. Now be prepared to face upto a harsh reality:- You are not one of those people no matter how much you might want to have their talent and ability. Face up to the fact that you dont and never will. Just discover your own talent, appreciate where it lies and make the best of it. There really is no point going through life being envious. Just accept who you are what you can do.
