Heya peepz,
I'm in the process of learning logic studio, and I found that I have grown a pretty good muscle memory for ableton that I'm not going to relearn in logic. So I'm asking if you could describe your most used commands and stuff you use in Logic and in Live.
In Live, I think my most used commands are:
- Shift-Tab to change between device view and clip view (edit a param on an effect, switch back to clip, edit it's automation, for example)
- Apple-B to switch between draw and select, I use that one like every 2 seconds
- Alt-drag to resize events or clips without snapping to grid
- Apple-Shift-D to duplicate a region in arrangement, very very useful
- Alt-drag to copy clips or devices, very useful as well
- Apple J to consolidate a part of a midi clip or to merge two clips together. My edit window quickly gets very chopchoppy, part due to this, because I drag a loop, stretch it, then go it, consolidate small part of it and drawn in breaks or variations.
- Apple-Shift-Backspace to delete the selected region
- Apple-Shift-M to insert an empty clip on the selected region.
- Apple-L to loop selection
- Apple-Q to quantize clip
I think that's about every command I use while editing, so I guess my workflow is not really optimal. I've been reading up on the key command list in Logic, and those are the ones I found out I will use, but I haven't got grown to them yet. Also, I have a bit of a pain to scroll and zoom in the piano roll in logic, the drag-bars don't do it for me. I found out this navigation thingie (Ctrl-Z to go to previous navigation view, I'm gonna try that out):
- C to toggle loop
- = merge regions (kind of like my Apple-J in live)
- split region by playhead (a bit like apple-J again)
- ctrl-apple-x : snip between locators (a bit like apple-shift-backspace). What's very cool is that logic will adapt the meter so that the location bar is still correct, a thing that drives me nuts in live cause I often add the odd beat to a break
- ctrl-apple-z insert silence
- ctrl-apple-v insert sniped region
- ctrl-apple-r repeat region between locators (apple-shift-d in live)
Also I can press Apple to select my second tool which would be the draw tooloften to do the equivalent of apple-B in live. So what are your commands? I'm especially interested in zooming and stuff in Logic, as well as piano roll/arrangement combinations, and people who do heavy audio chop chop in logic. I'm missing the fact that I can select the time units in ableton, and then just copy-drag the select audio to a new place, reverse etc... I must admit I haven't read the manual on audio editing in logic yet though.

Okay, been reading up a that more, the marquee tool is what I've been looking for I guess, as well as Ctrl-R in the audio editor.

I know nothing of logic but I love your sequence screen shot picture.. Those seem like a ton of tracks.. are they most midi? Or aud... Your mac must be super strong to handle all those vstis..

mixture of audio and midi. It doesn't eat up that much cpu though, no real superheavy vsti in there.

browsing through the logic doc, seeing it had multiple automation, score editing, and screensets. I'm not switching though, there is some stuff I already know I won't be able to do in logic. and the price is a killer

its funny, but that screenshot is so inspiring to see.
Next time someone says Live is only for loop based music, this should be shown.

hey hey, it's because daswesen is the most productive music writer i've ever seen
that said... i'm pretty sure the piano roll is better in logic than in live

it's all about CTRL+E, CTRL+J...for the windows crowd (split, consolidate).
Also, I mapped my draw tool to the tilde key for the quick toggle! Which happens to be right next to my space bar on my laptop. It was meant to be.

i have got a lots of buttons on my mouse . those buttons are simply attached to letters and symbols (ie. tab, ctrl, loop, ovr, etc..) on the keyboard and those letters and symbols are key mapped within ableton live. see, i have only two hands and now one hand is controlling a lot of live parameters and the other is always busy wankink
