I am now running a legit version of live 6, seig heil!
I'm going to use it mainly for DSP of my hardware, run synths->laptop->then out again to my mixer.
So if anyone can suggest any cool effect plugins, preferably free (and for mac), let me know! I need.. . some of everything really!
Are the ableton effects that are included any good? or should i scrap them and go for plugins

I only played with the Lite version of Abe but I remember the Beat Repeat thing being fun.

nazi scum.
ableton is worth the money, good job with that. there are some amazing free and cheap plugs out there, but use lives for a while or some really good stuff will be neglected (I am guilty of this). I can't stand the sound of ableton's verb, though... bleah

yea.. the new saturator is kewl and the grain delay is ok although there are much cooler free grain shiz. the tubes distortion is ace.. the eq seems ok to me.. oh yea and the dj eq thing is really handy for live stuff.
yea.. i'm not as crazy about the reverb either, but i've heard people get really good results. the thing about ableton effects is that they are very very digital sounding. not neccessarily a bad thing, they just have a very 'sharp' sound, so if you want a more 'analog' sound u might try other stuff. so i sugest using the grit plugs a lot "tube distorion, vinyl distortion, and saturator' and when i say a lot, i mean just a touch frequently.

cool. i rarely buy software, but i do have some legit stuff
free plugins?
check out
*CMT bitcrusher: link ye run of the mill bitcrushing and distortion
*Chunkware Vanilla Compressor: link fat compressor and limiter. you can even sidechain a set band of the input!
*plugins from the interruptor: link maybe not really the digital sounding stuff you're after, but analogic delay is very useful... let the sounds echo out into a fluttering wall of noise!
*the mda effect pack: link a lot of good stuff; i particularily like the ring modulator

the ableton native effects are SUPER flexible and if you use them tastefully no one can pin them down. native ableton is a big tool of mine.

I don't like the Abes reverb much, except for the Tremolo verb which I use probably too much. The spring reverb is pants, I use an old Computer Music one. I love the effects in Live, but be careful, I think they have a real "ableton" sound, if you overuse or use too obviously.
