First I guess I should say thanks to Roshi in the sense that his cello music got me interested in playing again. So hopefully you all won't think I'm copying him or something, that's not my intent.
Anyway, my brief cello history is something like I started when I was 4 or 5 and played until 18-19 when I went to college. I played off and on for a while but really I'd say I haven't touched my cello for almost 10 years.
So now I'm staying with my parents for 2 weeks while I work near where they live. I pulled out the cello and obviously it was not in playing condition, so my mom was nice enough to get it fixed with the soundpost re-set and some new strings. I tuned it up and wow did I suck! I still had all the music I'd ever played and it was pretty wild to look at what I was capable of playing back then. I made it though the first two Suzuki books before my fingering hand hurt pretty bad, but I was amazed also that somehow my body still was able to function to a certain degree. Anyway, I guess I'm typing to much.
The short of it is my dad gave me a cute little G4 Powerbook since he got a Macbook, so I recorded some random stuff into Garageband via my H4, so my ability to edit was fairly minimal just some Garageband effects, I only have headphones and no mouse so its annoying too. It was recorded in my parents barn.
Here's the result: link
At this point I don't know if I will take the cello back to Portland with me or not. I'm a bit torn because while I feel like I could probably improve pretty well with a bit of time and practice I also sort of feel like that part of my life is past and I should work on other things.
Any thoughts on the music or whatever else would be alright with me.

That was quite beautiful, thanks for sharing.
Also, it's nice to be inspired by someone, doesn't make you a copycat in my book.

Seriously, I do like this.
Why not bring the cello back? We could do dueling cellos.

Thanks guys.
Roshi, like I say, I can't decide if I'm really happy playing it any more. On the one hand I do enjoy playing it, but on the other hand I sort of would like to progress to something else, I spent my entire childhood/teen years playing cello rather than doing regular stuff. I appriciate that fact now, that is most certainly why I still work on music and sound, but at the time I really hated it sometimes.
Dueling cellos sounds kind of fun though. What's your teacher like? I guess if I took lessons again I might want a non-classical person if one exists. Still up in the air about it all.

Yeah, great stuff, super beautiful.
Would love to hear what it sounds like dry (just cello and barn).

My teacher is mostly classical, though he plays a lot of more modern pieces as well...I have a jazz background, so I apply a lot of what I learned about improv to the technique I learn from him.

Thanks adcBicycle, glad you liked it. I can tell you that you probably don't want to hear the dry stuff, it really does sound as bad as one might expect for not having played in so long. At any rate I'm trying to practice every night so that I can hit all the notes in tune so I will try and get something with more barn in the near future. Tonight I heard lots of mice running around in the walls.
Roshi, my background was very strictly classical, in fact I would go so far as to say that the above recording is one of the only times I've done any improv on the cello. I do remember in high school going to a jazz improve group once and I had absolutely no idea what to do it was so different from what I was used to. That was probably the other time I ever did improv.

only one cello player away from apocalyptica cover em411-band
having various instruments lying around is nice, somtimes when you haven't played in a long time it's like catching up with an old friend.

take it back with you, fantastic sound source, very rich, and doesn't come cheap, nor does your ability to play it. build on your past, make it work.

As Roscoe P. Coltrane might say, "good news, good news" my parents have decided to take pity on my poverty and help out with a hard case and getting the cello shipped to Portland which is pretty nice of them. So I guess Roshputimmo can be a reality.
