as there was recently chats about a new stfu Roma, i decided to try a bit traktor 3, coz i'd like to be able to do the same dj sets but WITHOUT carrying 15 kilograms of vinyls or using those vinyl control systems that i don't really like...
so i downloaded the demo of traktor 3, and GOD that thing is amazing !
really i enjoy 200x more to launch tracks in traktor than in ableton Live !!
the effects/'beat juggling'/looping thingiesn are great and it's really easy to handle !
so after hanging around in the music shops in Melbourne... i think i will buy Traktor and a akai mpd something... and BANG IT like that !!! maybe with some good old vinyls along that...
but really, i know thare's some serious ableton nerds here, and i used to be one of them... but didn't you get a bit bored of Live after a moment ? i mean: for live sets.
this blog is really useless... but i feel so alone for music in australia sometimes !

hey, you make an excellent point. lots of djs seem to be disappointed with the direction live has taken since version 4. it's all about studio daw wizardry now, where it used to be about live and on stage wizardry then. there may be more ableton live users like you seeking other options and discovering them. too bad for ableton, but i guess they have figured that the home studio market is larger than the i want to live forever market. in live's case i think that the two markets are largely on in the same and that if enough folks abandon ableton's ship then, well, you know. the live performers are live's core users, and if they ain't around after a while... ableton needs to clarify live's focus, i think. at least, to me, it seems that way.

Traktor is robust and has a singularity of purpose. I like that in an app.

I played around with the demo the other day and really enjoyed it. I only wish you could manually place beat markers for more accurate bpm readouts/syncing (it seems to not like complex tracks)...
I've been DJing a little bit with Live and while it's great, there are a lot of little annoyances. I'd love some features in like being able to view multiple waveforms, set multiple cue points, cleaner on the fly looping, etc... but they don't seem very concerned with the DJ market at this point.

Did a DJ gig last week in London with Traktor 3 and a PadKontrol and it worked really well. It does seem to get the synching wrong (even with the more minimal techno I was spinning) but you of course you can synch it by ear - like you should
I think it's more hands-on from a DJ point of view than Live, of course you miss out on the plug-in goodies but warping tracks in advance sort of does my head in, and it still takes to long to load, not spontaneous enough IMO.

Yeah I know, but I find beat matching really boring (and it takes my focus off the more fun/important stuff, which it wouldn't if I was better ).
My slacker philosophy is that with all the digital/visual aids available, beat matching by ear is sort of irrelevant (of course, unless your only using vinyl). Why do something uncreative if you don't have to? I do think it's kind of cheating to just mix 2 tracks straight forwardly in Live, but the promise of it is to go beyond that and take more creative risks (something I definitely need to do more). Where you draw the line when it comes to aids is an interesting topic that's up for debate... is tap tempo cheating, should you tape over waveform displays, etc...

After DJing with vinyl for so many years, it sort of comes as second nature to beatmix by ear, and I think it's fun actually
But I understand that it does take away from the creative risks, when it takes to much time, and you're more focused to keep it in time than to take it somewhere else. Suppose if you use a good controller it can be done quite easily and straightforward. You can map all kinds of stuff in Traktor, and a drumpad with a few rotaries can get you very far.

a bit OT: I'm having a weird problem with using an endless knob (mpd24) to control 'seek position' in the traktor 3 demo. vid: link
post on ni forum said: "Strange behaviour when i map an endless knob from my mpd24 to the 'Deck Seek Position' control of Native instruments Traktor 3 (demo).
When i start to turn the knob, the seek position sets off in the opposite direction, as if it remembers the direction it was turned in last time. If i continue to turn the knob, the seek position movement slows down and then starts to accelerate in the correct direction.
If i stop turning the knob and turn in the opposite direction the same thing happens.
This problem doesn't happen if I map the mpd24 knob to a traktor knob (eg. master level). It only seems to affect the seek position.
Traktor bug? user error? Any thoughts/help much appreciated."

yeah i sync by ear too ;)
but i think the sync option works very well, especially with techno. the best would be with a 2 outputs soundcard and an external mixer + a midi controller
