yesterday a laptop battle took place in stuttgart.
it was the first of it's kind in this town and surprisingly well attended.
there were eight participants including daswesen, yghartsyrt and me.
setting up the equipment was a nightmare and it took ages until we got to get started. i unfortunately got eliminated in the first round because nobody seemed to like my streched three minute fartsample. because that was how it sounded like to me
manuel took the wiimote, left the stage during his performance and run havoc in the audience. that was awesome and he got farther. nils got into the finals but then had to give it to some other dude despite his very dedicated body movements and crazy spastic drills and beats
i was very professional of course getting drunk almost as soon as i got there and at one point almost tripped on the mixer that was set up on the floor directly behind the stage. that got me some angry looks from various people
i lost my jacket and ripped my pants badly (fortunately not myself) on some fucked barbed wire while walking home warrior-style meaning i jumped through random urban gardens screaming in anger
sorry no pics but i can maybe upload an mp3 of my set if you want me to
i'm looking forward to the next one and try to be calmer next time. i never ever played life before (!!!) so i channeld my excitement into a bit of control-freakishness behaviour.
but eh, what the heck. i need to fix my pants now so i can leave the house!

ha. just got home. it was really fun. setting up was really a little clunky, but whatever.
didn't expect getting to the finals. but the dude that won, really deserved, because of him playing stuff, that the crowd loved. so everything's golden.
sorry to hear about your pants.
no mp3s neither here.
pics will be sorted out soonish but i don't excpect anything great because i was really smashed halway through the evening.

lololol. (also: i'm glad i don't live near you)
Don't laptop battles make you feel used up and spat out? competing to please the judges/dancefloor with some antics? I don't see the attraction i guess.

for me it was just some opportunity to play live. it's been quite a while, especially since work doesn't leave much time for searching for new venues and such.
but i can totally see your point

If i could think of laptop battles as something totally unrelated to why i'm interested in music in the 1st place, maybe then i could 'get' into them. At the moment it seems a bit too close for comfort though, like a parody, i have a hard time escaping that idea--but i appreciate it if other folk can get something from them.
Was this the 1st european laptop battle that we know of?

Yo, just got back as well. The night dissolved into very blurry visions, but somehow we managed to get home without losing anything. I had good fun, but I was already pretty drunk when I started playing (there was this ska-concert next door, so I just got to drinking in a way to kill time). I lost against the guy who won, and it was well deserved, but yeah I have my issues as well.
1) the idea of competition makes it pretty difficult to have just a good time
2) i'd like to hear more of the other guys, and not just 6 minutes cut off by an MC
The great thing yesterday was the crowd, the venue was packed, they were well cheering as well, so definitely fun to go up stage there.
Among the things I remember from the night:
- passing myself off as an estonian to chat up some girls and try to get a room for the night
- chatting up these teenager ska fans and getting them to give us all their weed,
- extensive dancing
- some more intense dancing and then somehow realizing i'm at the train station (I think hakan drove us, thank you
- drinking coffee and tee at the train station while speaking nonsense with two stupid girls at the next table, then somehow finding myself in the train listening to mozart at full volume
- getting a long shower when back home and getting into bed

no. there were several i think.
in a way it is trying make laptop music look as „valuable“ als „real“ music, which aims in the complete different direction, as what think, what the interesting parts of electronic music/aspects of performative acts as a laptop artists are.
but on the other hand it was just playing live. no difference to other occasions. (at least for me it wasn't)

yes, i wanted to edit the list, but meeting nq and tylth and the expensive conversations about performing, steve reich, granular synthesis and stuff: wicked! I guess i must have been pretty annoying near the end, but you left before I think it got really funny, though I have no memories left of it. haha
