a nice fresh start

I enjoyed this.

thank god for backups ;)
but, bummer surely, happened to me once before

ok before you start crying and smashing your head against the wall, let assertain certain things..

1. Is it mechanical failure with the disc? Can you hear it spinning up and does the PC still see it attached, even if its blank/requesting you format it?

2. Are you using XP, OSX or Linux?

If the answer is Yes and PC then I can give you some software that will recover it to another drive - its a bit of a labourious process but at least you get about +95% of the data back.

If the answer is No and/or OSX then youre fucked! ;)

^ trying to edit to say:

If the answer to 1. is no or 2 = OSX then I cant help.

ok i didn't like this at all, but yeah you have my sympathies against those gdam computers.

damn!!! that sucks

get a raid card!!!
one of the 3 drives in my array failed..... just pop a new one in and you get all the data back.... can even still read and write to the drive if one is frigged.

I'd hate to lose all of my stuff. I hope you can fix it.
Well, the funny thing is, the portable harddrive was an encrypted partition, and those programs that should fix these kinds of things can't make shit out of the information on the disk.

I'm trying something called TestDisk, it's freeware and seems legit.. We'll see how that turns out.

Crappy. We see an identical blog like this every few months it seems.

I'm gonna back up right NOW. my condolences to you and good luck with the recovery....

knoppix is a free linux distro for getting stuff back. worth a try

hmm that reminds me the real reason why I bought all those DVDs AND a 2nd USB drive
