imagine creating patches on an imaginary modular synth or manipulating samples instead of playing the piano!!

I admit that is REALLY awesome, but i am not sure practical it would be...
I remember seeing on this site a link to some old now-defunct company that tried to sell EEG caps that would send to MIDI.

all i want is something that turns my whistling into midi!
Recent blogs: Chuck, vacation, inflamatory discovery

all i want is utofbu to record his whistling directly instead of worrying about midification

is it really that awesome? i mean, how much programming, scaling, quantizing, etc is in between the EEG & the piano?
Recent blogs: Non-standard midi keyboard, janko

check out Rokeby link

i watched him perform live a few years back and he was wearing a headset which converted EEG's into musical phrases.. I must admit rokeby did sound noodlely bollocks.. guess he isn't a trained musician.

didn't alvin lucier or john cage do something like this?

if he's triggering pre-programmed midi/whatever phrases its not a big deal.

it seems like it's basically a 1-d controller responding to 'calm-to-agitated' states. when you cross the threshold you go from beethoven to satie.

LOL!

This is all reminding me of that hoary old movie Brainstorm: link

AKoff Music Composer Version 2.0

AKoff Music Composer is music recognition software which performs Wave to Midi conversion. Composer recognizes polyphonic music from microphone (other Wave input or file) and converts it into Midi sequences.

You can sing, whistle or play guitar, piano, flute and so on into your microphone, Composer will automatically recognize and score your music and create standard Midi sequences. Neither a Midi keyboard nor any musical experience are required to compose music

Yeah, all an EEG is going to read is really a rating of your general brain activity. Don't get too excited- clearly an art school project more than a science project, imho.

david rosenboom did a bunch of recordings using brainwave controllers in the early to mid 70's. i assume there was much less interference and more raw signal
