--> Today at work, I had to see one of the directors to give him a walkthrough of how to use wireless on his laptop and the remote access system. While I was waiting for him I engaged his PA in conversation.

She has a Greek surname and so asked about what the weather would be like there over christmas, as Im planning to go away to either there or somewhere else warm, instead of staying in London and being cold.

She asked why I was going to go away for christmas, I replied that it was because I dont celebrate christmas and want to go elsewhere for the period.

As soon as I said this, she exclaimed, "you miserable git!".

I took offence at this. Just because I dont celebrate a religious holiday [if you didnt know, Im an Atheist], doesnt instantly make me 'miserable'. Me, being the sarcastic fucker that I am and also that she mentioned she had religious leanings, went on to explain that I dont have any kids [people always say "christmas is for the kids innit?"] and that religion is a load of empty superstitious nonsense and being atheist, why should I celebrate it?

She replied aghast that I should respect her views and her religion but showed little respect for my belief system.

I am never miserable over christmas despite it being the time of year when my mum died or that its some long dead d00ds supposed birthday.

I dont celebrate it after years of suffering a really stressful as a kid, at home with all my fellow siblings and parents and got to a point where I asked myself why we did it every year being stuck around each other for about a week, stressed to fuck, for no real discernable reason.

Previous years I have helped out with a charity event that gathers all the 'meals on wheels' old folks and people with learning disabilities and puts on 'a bit of a spread' for them at a local college hall. I dont sit indoors being miserable or shouting humbug to people from my balcony.

How dare someone prejudge me according to their belief system because I dont 'play along' with theirs. I get the same shit because I havent eaten meat for nearly 20 years and most peoples instant response to my informing them that i dont follow football is, "What? Are you gay or something?"

I have to agree with what cbit said on a previous blog about that you cannot respect everyones viewpoint, especially when they are prepared to make snap judgements because you do, or dont do, something.

I think its worse because they make instant associations that are quite spurious when I express about a lifestyle choice I have made.

I think its also because Im a bit upset as one of guys I work with that is pretty much my best friend, is leaving to live in Latvia with his GF. Also, my performance manager is going back to Australia after being in the UK for 6 years and its these 2 that I work with the most and quite closely as well.

So it looks like Im going to be looking for another job as the person most likely to take over the Aussie girls job is, to put it bluntly, a glory seeking power crazed cunt but thats the world of corporate for you. The money is not good enough and despite saying that I want a payrise, my company is not forthcoming with an offer of an increase. Im actually earning £2/hour less than I was 10 years ago and to top it, the fares on my train line are going to be subject to a 14.5% increase in January.

Bah, humbug!

So, are you non-religious and go along with the trappings of the festive season or do you do your own thing? If so, what do you do?

i would be perfectly willing to partisipate in the celebration of buying things holiday,

but im always broke in december. my xmas is in febuary.

i think maybe some ppl get upset with people that dont celebrate as they really dont like xmas either and dont think others should be able to get out of the crap holiday so easily.

I can see how some people would be envious of my non-commitment to 'putting myself through the grinder' and suffering family but I made that decision after having years of that myself as a kid. As soon as I left home, I vowed never to have to do that again.

I enjoy making gifts for people - one year it was cranberry salsa, this year it's probably going to be candy and good spiced nuts.

I don't like feeling obligated at all to do this - I do it because I like to and would probably do it even if there weren't religious holidays.

Likewise, the same with celebrating other holidays - I enjoy spending time with my mom and sister's family but I don't really get wrapped up in giving people th perfect gift or making it a perfect holiday.

i buy gifts for my immediate family and no one else.
if im not working, ill be going home to visit my mum for a couple of days.
every year my mum will try to get us all to go to mass.
but i havent been for over 10 years.

i look forward to the food and drink.

i'm a non-Christian who goes all out for Christmas. I think of it as a time for celebrating friends & family & loved ones and getting away from the office for a bit, and rejoicing the fact that the days are starting to get longer. I did some research into the matter and found out that that's what the whole celebration originally was about before the Romans converted & decreed that Saturnalia was going to be everything it always was but you had to call it Christmas from now on. See my blog on The Pagan Roots of Christmas for more.

stfu you miserable git

oh ya, what he said

So Many "Roshi's spicy nuts" jokes... they could fill an advent calendar.
you told someone "that religion is a load of empty superstitious nonsense" and are suprised she doesn't respect you?

LOL, lumps of coal for you!

piss off you gay heathen hippy

actually you'd do well here, time to pack up and move (although it's cold here round the holidays as well)

LOL!

I'm stepping in it lately...I'm a fish in a barrel as of late.

im not religious
i still have a buzz at christmas because theres always loads of friends partying n stuff
im too poor/mean/selfish to give presents and im not bothered whether i get any or not
i like christmas trees because i like coloured lights and i like trees
the worst thing about christmas is the tv ads/songs n all that shit
coal would be a great gift for me
ive got a gig on christmas eve! beaky monsterclaws will live once more!

I like some aspects of christmas. Not the religious side of it or the presents but everybody being together and enjoying each other's company. Tbh I prefer new year, because on new year's eve I can get drunk and imagine sleeping with a total stranger.

i don't really get it either. my GF family is very religious and she always wants me around despite the fact i almost always end up starting some kind of problem or argument and the festivities grind to a halt. i don't think its a conspiracy but people sure are cleaning up on our spending during these holidays.

I like buying stuff for myself and everyone seems more forgiving of this self indulgence around Christmas, so me likes it
