Dear tylth,
i have written this in the past, for you to read in the future, whenever you feel like you lost track on your musical endeavours or feel like you run out of goals or inspiration.
for whenever you feel like this to read, really.
i know you've had this "crisis" lately about yourself questioning your artistic craftsmanhip and musical integrity. you blogged about it and got a lot of very encouraging comments indeed.
then you set the course, i still remember vividly, towards a new era of both internal and external music production related counciousness, as you did countless times in the past but this time with boisterous insistence.
you took a deep breath.
you wiped all those battered samples from your main harddisc.
you pounded the dust out of your vst-folder. subtracting all those crappy stuff was the best diet this area could have gotten. don't regret it. you can do better with only a few dedicated pieces you know inside out, so
you started to sit down and finally learn the sh*t out of the software you own/have along with reading the accompanying manuals. even if supplied in pdf-format.
and you began again to suck up information about music theory, technical aspects of recording, mixing, mastering, levels, meters, acoustical terminology, interviews of famous artists. you don't read this to confuse you, instead you read this to gain the knowledge, the knowledge that you can never put an end to learning and even as a professor you will still remain a student. it's important to practice finding your own way of things to work. if things don't work, practice more and learn more until they do.
you sat down and sampled this instrument, frequatic. you spent time working process- instead of goal-oriented. something you rarely did in recent years. afterwards you were amazed and fulfilled about the sounds you got and processed further. unique sounds. YOUR sounds.
you bought a book that will help you to play and understand the keys that mean the world to you, and i hope you put some time into it and made good progress until now!
you made plans (and i hope by the time you are reading this again have accomplished) to buy the software you use and love and to support the blessed manufacturers. they deserve it and, even more important, YOU deserve it.
you made an asthonishing template for your daw, with all the "machines" set up in a way to communicate with your midi gear so that programming and writing becomes an intuitive task. your gear truly extensions of yourself, your mind.
then you sat down and realized that true artistry is really about imagination.
whether it be a painter who already sees the picture emerging on the blank canvas,
whether it be a scultur who gets rid of everything in the stone what doesn't look like a lion
whether it be a blind photographer who achieves to capture something in his images that is hard to grasp with eyes only. link (blind photographer Evgen Bavcar)
how are they able to create but with the tool of imagination!
so tylth, you lazy pussy, start using this borderless tool of imagination to shape ideas in your head. NOW!!!
and remember,
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." ~ Pablo Picasso
good luck & all the best
yours sincerely
tylth

i paint and i have to say that the main source of my inspiration, aside from other people's painting, is the physical act of painting.
conclusion: imagination comes out of doing, so don't wait around waiting for ideas, let te ideas come to you.

I just had just finished watching The Shawshank Redemption when I read this. Somehow it made this letter even better, coming from a really moving film. I love this "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. ~ Pablo Picasso."
Stored, so I can look at this in the future too.

cool, what I need is a letter from my FUTURE self to my present self.
I could write a letter to my past self from here in the future, not that it would do any good. or WOULD it? some kind of retroactive hocus pocus?
