--> Well, my 6 year old powerbook has finally breathed it's last. It happened about 2 hours ago and when it went down it took all of my music with it. In the past, as I thought about this inevitable day I always envisioned myself being absoutely torn up by the loss of so many hours of work...
In actuality it's kindof freeing. Yes, there were certainly some good starts on there that I would have preferred to keep, but there was also a lot of false starts that were staring at me with their little 8-bar eyes and goading me for not pushing them past simple loops.
I'm going to majorly upgrade my setup in the coming months: a Mac Pro, an audio/MIDI interace for recording vocals/instruments (finally) and sequencing samples on the puter from my MPC, a condensor mic, and maybe some fun little instruments to play with.
I've been making due with what I have for a long time, and now, with my starting full-time, salaried work and being (mostly) done with college, I feel it's time to step up my game.

So in summation: Expect new music from me soon, but too soon and pray for the soul of my little lappy gone on to greener pastures.

apples rarely let people down, but when they do it really sucks. at least you got a monster 6 years lifetime out of it. I went throughthis shit over the summer when my pimp ass 900mhz g3 with 14'' screen and dvd player broke after a year of use. I dropped it too many times and would whip the screen open a lot. my replacement only cost 315 with shipping and it does all i need even though its a few steps back from my last

i wouldn't suggest the macpro cause of some of the board flaws and price. a used g4 powerbook runs about $600, a used g4 ibook runs about $500.

if your not focused on portalbility then get a used g5 eMAC they look good in studios and prices are cheap at 250

If the computer died and not the hard drive, you can rip the HD out, buy a USB external enclosure, install the HD inside, and then hook up the enclosure to your nearest computer. You'll be able to access the HD and save all your files... again, assuming the HD is still working and only your computer died... double again, if you care about saving your files.

I totally agree with you about that liberating feeling. You don't realize how much weight is on your mind when you have all those loose ends floating around until you get rid of all of them. I am really in need of a complete fresh start too.
Cleaning the HD of all my junk projects really makes me remember that this is my music, I can do whatever I want. I get to boxed in sometimes.

i reformat every few months without backing up when i feel like i'm in a rut. feels good... like a new pair of socks. instead of trying something new it's just too tempting to go back and spend all your time just listening to odds and ends.

That's something i'm guilty of often, though sometimes it can be the creative push you need. The other day i listened to tapes of my old band from, like, eleven years ago. embarrassing, funny, nostalgic and, somehow, inspiring. I'm deffo gonna sample some of the in-between-takes-fucking-around bits...
