--> I just woke up from this cool/scary but subtle dream and now I'm trying to think of music that gives me the willies. All I can think of is a few tracks from Richard Devine's Cautella and they don't quite do it but get close, sets the mood well - "RSL-Com", "Orr Unfolding" . Depending on the time of day, a couple tracks from SAW2, especially the 2nd CD. Parts of Draft 7.30 give me the creeps but don't quite scare me. Venetian Snares tries pretty hard on every album but the only thing that gives me the shivers is "In Quod" and a couple others from Winter in the Belly of a Snake. Unfortunately I've been listening too much electronic stuff lately and can't think of anything else.

There's also a couple of horror movies and video games that had awesome, scary music like Metroid and Silent Hill. I can't think of any others right now because the best scary music for movies you don't even realize is there, it just becomes part of the mood.

i just loaded aphex twin's Cock Ver10 into audacity and reversed it.
SCARY!!!!!

try Wojciech Kilar, he wrote the music for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Alfred Schnittke's Viola Concerto - fucking terrifying. Truly
Bela Bartok's Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste - there is something in the symmetry of this piece that is just downright demented

ovuca, astrobotnia, datachi, are the traditionally scary/spooky sounding artists. if you are looking for "weird scary" then check out bruce hack, or unkle

venetian snares tries so hard, but really other than the "huge chrome cylinder unfolding" all the other albums sound exactly the same to me.

the music that freak me out scare me is the last battle theme song of the game chrono trigger that song make you 1 sick because of the paning fx and it remind me of that horific scene of the game where lavos come out and destroy earth in 1999

the second movement of György Ligeti's piano cycle "Musica Ricercata"

i think the music from the castle stages in supermariobros is more scary. guess thats just years of painful 8 bit torture from mario. after playing the first one forever i welcomed the much better(and my favorite) super mario bros 2. better music, graphics, gameplay and storyline
the Ligeti music that teh Kubricks put into 2001 and The Shining - that stuff used to make me very very super uncomfortable and miserable

kubrick picks that most offensive music in his films. he pratically assaults your ears. eyes wide shut with its weird venetian chants, clockwork with that blasted beethoven, and spartacus with a score that would make anyone want to die

oh shit just noticed your friday 13th game screenshot. that game blew hard. something like you had to get jason's mom's sweater and then you when the game. the idea of a game where little camp kids have to try and stab a killer is wierd. this game still didn't suck as much as nightmare on elm street

britney spears

a lot of the penderecki david lynch used for "inland empire" is really frightening. i agree about the silent hill stuff too.

the "dark woods" part of the twin peaks score and this one specific song used in doom 2 are really perfect for what they do, making a dull, brooding, claustrophobic atmosphere.

fear is music, i think, is almost impossible to achieve. the deep melancholy is a tiny bit easier. i think if someone played me chopin in a 13th century polish castle in the middle of the night, i'd shit my pants.

while we're talking viddy game, the score for Bioshock really enhances its fear factor - but then that's all relative to context, wouldn't have the same effect on its own

Shinjuku Thief used to do some scary shit... actually that guy still does some effective scary music for movies these days, I think he scored Wolf Creek, the score was one of the better things about that flick
