--> Jam in the Kitchen On a very cold NYC Saturday I bravely set out for the F train to Queens. Several days prior I found an open invite on 411 for a jam-session in someone's (Tom Phonic/hardvoltnine) kitchen. I invited my friend Dylan to meet me there, but otherwise knew no one. The walk from the F-train was 10 minutes of wintery brutality in the bleakest part of NY I've seen in some time. All old factories, and car-repair shops with low-income housing projects in between. I was the first one there (as the invite said all-night jam and it was only 6pm when I got there) and was greeted by Tom, and his roommate Jason with their friend Tae, who were all happily jamming/setting up gear in the kitchen. Featuring a full drum-kit, electric-bass, electric-guitar, computer w/various soft-synth/sequencers and an assortment of synths / sequencers / controllers. There was no-one there but the four of us for a while and we had a great time chatting/getting introduced. Unfortunately I had to leave just as the gathering was beginning to pick up steam (9pm) with more musicians arriving - but was thrilled to find the hosts/guests very talented, fun, and extremely hospitable. Next time I'm bringing more than my Nintendo DS & Electroplankton. I didn't take many pics this time - more the next. That's my friend Dylan behind the drums. Hilarious - 'cause we both talked about how all we could really handle are drum-machines. Real drums are FAR too physically and mentally demanding... (for us, anyway) but it didn't stop me from trying a bit. ;)

My sincere and generous thanks to the hosts (Tom and Jason) and everyone that braved the weather that evening. Lookin' forward to the next one.

I saw this on myspace. I wish I was NYC, able to check this out. It looked liked it was hella-fun.

i didn't even DO all that much (certainly didn't really play) - really just talked to random people about random things. randomly. I like random-ness + nice-ness. new york can be full of both if you're open to it. i'm more open to it when I leave my room. ;)

tom - i totally said i was going to attend and then totally didnt due to finals. BOOOOO SCHOOL

This does sound like a blast... my kitchen's far too small, but... something like this in my basement or something would be way cool, and I think we have enough Portland Peeps(tm) to pull it off.

Very cool!
Wish i could have jammed with you all.
