I was out shopping today and I saw one of those Eee PCs - you know, those tiny little laptops that are £200. It runs Linux and comes with Open Office and Firefox installed on it, and I was tempted to pick one up for taking to meetings when I'm working.
This is it: link
Is it asking too much that this thing might be able to be useful somehow for making music? Its got a few USB ports so I could plug in an external interface, but what am I gonna be able to run on Linux with a 7 inch "widescreen"?

I've been drooling over it.
Jogn recommended waiting for the 8 GB version.
You can install either ubuntu studio or a stripped down version of xp (using nlite, you can get the install down to about 700 mb) and it seems like it'd be a great little lappy. I was thinking it'd be great for a performance laptop for ableton, esp if you only use a few trax & fx.

ive seen ppl mod these with thumb drive memory, making them like 32 gb. doenst look like a very easy mod though.
i really want something like this to take to work (out in the ocean) but im still kinda unsure about this.. fears of ssd drive lifespan, 7" useablilty..
these are hard to consider when small conventional laptops (w/ hhd) can be had for around 450-600 and are a lot faster/ larger screen/ hd ect.

I run an 80 gig hp with 1.4 gz processor for all my live shows, and I wrote a slew of tunes on it...

But it's SOOO CUTE THOUGH!
Ubuntu Studio looks mega, thanks Roshi. Just what I need! What about drivers, would there be any way to link this thing up to a USB audio interface or even just my Samson USB mic?

PS: I got 2 laptops, so I don't need another particularly, but this one fits in my coat pocket (much to the disgust of the security in the computer shop!)

seems like they say you can run Windows XP or Tiger on it too, but maybe i read the specs wrong.
i agree that you should just put in more money and get a used apple laptop. at 12 inches my last one looks adorable and the $300 i spent was cheap when you consider it plays all my music software

As long as the soundcard/mic is supported by ubuntu, you should be cool.
Little old, but here: link

Got a Macbook already, and I love it, but even the little one is a little too big for me to just take it anywhere with me like I do my phone, for example.
Thanks for the link Roshi, appreciate it man! I'm gonna take a USB mic down to the PC place and just plug it in, see what happens

oh are you going the linux way? If i ever got a set, I was thinking of installing windows on it instead.
i'm not sure about xandros linux having jackd and everything else installed for audio funnery though, in which case you might not need ubustudio. i remember having some problems on my other computer with the realtek audio controller because there weren't updated alsa drivers for it.
