so me and my mate were jamming the other day. i thought how good it would be to have a step sequencer dedicated to my nord lead. i was using my esx to sequence it, synced to his machine drum. but i would like to make one in a modular program such as reaktor or max msp. with dedicated knobs for cut off on each channel, multiple sequences on four midi channels and even stuff like reverse and that.
anyone got any thoughts, built one already?
thanks in advance !

someone has already built this in maxmsp. to find it just download as many examples and academic tutorials as you can. set up your mac to recognize your norg and maxmsp via oms. run the patches and soon enough you'll come across the perfect one.

i looooooove modular sequencing
one of my favorite things is to make a stepper (something that sequences intervals, rather than pitches) and then run it through quantizers.
another thing which works really well is to make a sequence that can be accessed polyphonically, and then playing it with various lfos (reversed, scrambled, faster/slower)
i've done this stuff in the g2, it's been a year long pursuit pretty much

yeah i was thinking about buying the g2, pretty much for this job alone really.
we are thinking of both getting them for live use.
will let you know how i get on tonight

well, you could do the same kind of stuff in reaktor or max/msp, too, so you don't neccesarily need to run off to grab the g2...
but, the g2 might pretty well cover the stuff the lead is doing. you can set all your midi sequencing stuff up in slot A and then have four massive synths in b, c, and d.

there was one for 350 on ebay. and we missed it.
one day. one day.
i have been converted to nord the day i got this synth. they can do no wrong.
gonna try something in bidule tonight and see if i can do what i want.
anyone know where i get the ccs for the nord?

Bidule could definitely pull this off, but is a little rough due to the lack of a decent gui. I think doing it in Max would be a lot more visually usefull.
Twerk has a Max sequencer patch called mooquencer, which is pretty good link . If you rip apart the patch, it takes care of a lot of the basic dirty work involved...

bidule i think would work.
please let me know if/when you go off the modular sequencer deep end, cuz i want to bounce ideas off in a non-environment dependent way. ricemutt and I talk back and forth about this stuff. basically, reaktor, max, G2, and some other things are all pretty much equivalent, just different styles. it doesn't change the basic ideas, tho.

just played with the basic 16 stepper in reaktor.
no ccs and no memory for the sequence. so when you reverse the sequence it kills all the note data.
i assigned my xy pad on my controller to gate though - and it was ace.
i guess you need a memory buffer for the sequence. my mate mad a 16 step sequencer in visual basic
with joystick input i may try that out and see what features are in there to try and lift some of them.

well, i needed to custom make the things i was talking about.
the 'stepper' is basically a s&h which samples and adds to it's own output. therefore, you get steps that are intervallically linked.
the theme remembering thing is basically a shift register, or a series of s&h units, that's linked each step to a multiplexor. so you have 8 slots which hold note info, and then the multiplexor reads those and spits them out.
the tools are there, but they have to be customized.
i know reaktor has at least a lookup table. that's gonna give you more function than a 16 step sequencer. you can 'scan' through the lookup table in any way you want.

numerology.

it's easy to route midi CCs into it from a controller and CCs out of it. It'll even handle nrpn. you can quantize the out put of intervals very easily and even modulate that with basically anything you like. you can build s&h quickly, interactive arpeggios, basically anything you want. oh, and it also has the best groove clock ever.
i know - it's Mac only, but i'd say it's worth going out and buying a cheap ibook g3 to run it on. it uses almost no cpu if you turn off the AU hosting capabilities and just run it as a midi sequencer. if you have any questions just shoot me an emmail

a Nord Lead with modular sequencing - yeah, like others have mentioned, you're basically describing a Nord Modular.
I'm selling off a bunch of my shit to buy a Nord G2. Anyone want to sell me one?

well Quip, i think you should download Pure Data and i'm pretty sure you can pretty quickly build your sequencer... the problem will be maybe to figure out the midi sync...

thanks all well check out all these helpful suggestions.
i tried hacking a max patch last night and it worked but not really what i wanted.
i think maybe i am going to build one from scratch in reaktor, as i can add audio loopers
for live use along with the sequencers.
will let you know how it goes.
