hi folks,
well i got some good feedback regarding where to get some webspace. i think i'm going to go with yahoo, and use their sitebuilder software. a friend offered some space, but i don't want to be a nuisance and have to bug him about stuff.
now: do folks have any memorable websites (including their own) that i could peek at for ideas? i won't steal any, but am looking to get familiar with design techniques, etc.

got rss? emfeeds completes the 'recent empage blogs' functionality.
what does yahoo offer in terms of bandwith for $'S? i get my hosting through godaddy, and they recently upgraded the cheep 3.99/month plan to 5b hosting and 250gb bandwidth. im surrently stuck with a not very customized wordpress for my website ( link ) that is less cool looking than the imagemap based site it replaced, but soooo much easier to update.
i love your website fredo, its so pretty and kinda ooh ahh without being anoyingly complex.
i miss photoshop.

nice site fredo! more and more sites are going to a strictly photoshop layout because it seems like everyone's got hi-speed nowadays.
for webhosting, the best deal i could find was siteground:
link
very affordable, free domain, super reliable, fast servers, excellent customer service, and it comes with just about every (good) php script pre-installed so you can really do just about anything with it.

I don't have much on offer at any given time, so for me a simple design and 'whitespace' is the way to go.

cc, is it easy to integrate wordpress into a site? I'm tired of bashing away at HTML when I want to update.

yeah its not too hard, especaily with v2 out, that has more tools and options. its basically a php blog sysytem with a control page and a bunch of css.
i was just thinking of encapsulating wordpress into a greater main site, would be simple, just put it in a frame or something. mixedtape has done it a few times to great effect. plus there are thousands of templates out there you can modify to suit your needs.
and as far as adding content, its a fucking breeze,. its like using em411.

JCD: yahoo hosting has now built in one-click install of wordpress and you may add most plugins without ROOT access.
the "look and feel" of wordpress mostly depends on CSS (generally one file) and is a great way to consolidate and
easily modify a website appearance and or structure.

css zen garden was an inspiration to me at the start.... good luck

thanks for the links.
i think yahoo was like 10$ a month. it looks like there may be some better deals out there. . . but after my em experience i'm valuing stability the most.
so it looks like image heavy sites are okay these days, assuming that most people have high speed?
i do find admonitions to use simple fonts disconcerting, so would like to use mostly images.
i also like the handmade designs and some of the dada influence. i also have this notion of making a webpage that looks like a business app, so people can read it at work. maybe that's just too stupid though.
i like the idea of webcircles too so that people can navigate to independent music that matches their tastes.
i hate clicking mice. could a site operate entirely on rollover? i.e. can hi res images be pulled up on rollovers, and can navigation occur with rollover, i.e. moving cursor to a node to go back to the home page? maybe not.

rrooyyccee. someone correct me, but i think that all the rollover and hover-scroll features would be simple in flash..
damnit. why am i still too lazy to learn that one!

you can do rollover navigation all in photoshop. just think of your entire site as a giant button. i think the problem is that all the button states need to pre-load so if someone is quick and all the states haven't pre-loaded, they might see loading icons for a few seconds.

hmmm. if the button states need to be preloaded, then the best thing would be for the button states to be very simple. i wonder if it is possible to have the button states simply bring up text. i wouldn't mind having a website that somebody could read in 10 seconds. er. maybe not.
can button states lead to a bona fide link, or do they have to call up an image?

afaik, if you do it in photoshop, it would have to be a "picture" of the text. what you can be done with plain ol' html or maybe javascript with iFrames and layers, but you'll need a something like reamweaver or goLive.. or know someone who's good with coding.

i'm noticing the opposite happen. more and more sites going 'web standards' and using text wherever possible instead of images. and fewer flash sites.
google likes real text. if you use images of text, make sure theres also a real text version of that in the source that google can find.

If theyre directedly searching for information (and most of the time they are) users get pissed off when you mess with their expectation of how buttons work (ie. you follow a link by clicking it, not rolling over). But if you still wanted to, you can implement that kind of behaviour using javascript. no need to learn flash.
