My laptop hard drive died a few days ago, and instead of replacing it I decided to finally throw down the cash for a shiny new macbook. My last computer predated the aluminums, so I felt like it was time...plus I had already replaced almost every replaceable part including 2 hard drives, a super drive, ram, and a monitor.
Anyway, this new computer is pretty effing fast, and I can't wait to try doing some jitter stuff with it. My last computer couldn't do a lot of the open gl stuff that jitter seemed to tout being able to manipulate, so I was SOL for the most part.
Having had to recently become aware of UB versus PPC software, I found the activity monitor in the utilities folder which allowed me to see which old pieces of software I was installing would suck up an inordinate amount of cpu. I've been finding replacements for a lot of the old software I used to use on my other computer that will be more intel friendly, however one PowerPC process listed in the activity monitor that I'm wary of effing with is labeled "mysqld". What the heck is this? It seems like a system process, but why would it be powerpc then, instead of intel? Is it ok if I get rid of it? For all you mac geeks out there who know more about the inner workings of osx, please help.

mysqld is mysql which is a database language/archieture .. mostly with servers and websites. Though I'm not sure about if it is necessary to have with os x.

The 'd' part just signifies that it's a deamon, a background process.
afaik it's not necessary to have mysql running on a mac, unless you're using it for web or software dev like em978 said. If you had it running on your old machine, and don't see it on your new machine, don't worry about finding a replacement.

This may signify that you have personal web sharing active? You may want to check system prefs/sharing.

I'm not really worried about having it or not having it. When I first got my computer I started putting my old software on it from my backup discs only to realize that half of it wasn't UB. I'm wondering if I accidentally installed that as well, or if it came with my computer (stupid that it would be ppc though). The web sharing thing makes sense. My apartment's Wireless router died recently, so we've been sharing internet out through my roomie's laptop.

I've been going through a dumpling/chinese roll making phase recently. That's not rice...it's a sweet bean roll. I'd share recipes, but it's not necessarily em related ;p
