You may remember that I work for one of the largest global IT companies and at the end of 2006 and the start of 2007, I worked around the country, rolling out new XP machines for the client [one of the biggest global insurance companies] I provide support to.
For the last 7 months or so, I have worked in the London office, providing dedicated support to one specific division of our client.
My team [5 of us] sit with all the other IT guys [app dev and support, networks, server infrastructure, phones, etc etc] and some of the project managers who roll out various projects. One guy, Sati, is managing this high end scanner project that is being rolled out to 4 sites, with the [6] scanners costing about £12.5k each.
I hadnt really spoken to him beyond saying hello or giving a nod whenever I saw him until I was told that I would be supporting these scanners when the project went live and was formally introduced. In some of the conversations that followed, we talked about where we live, etc and it transpired that he still lives in the area we both grew up in. We soon learnt that we went to the same school [but he is 8 years older than me] and had a laugh recollecting some of the teachers who taught us both.
Today, my manager, Neil and the team coordinator, Helen, came to London to have a meeting with the team and catch up type stuff as they are based in Swindon, about 90 mins from London and dont get the chance to come up that often.
A little while ago, there was an issue with one of the scanners not being delivered [when it was it was to the wrong site and damaged] that was part of Sati's project that involved a lot of service managers making noises, etc, including Helen. So when Helen and I went to get a cup of tea, I pointed Sati out and mentioned that we went to the same school. Helen asked where and was surprised as it was the same general area she had grown up. I know she lives in Cheltenham so thought she had grown up there.
After talking about it for about 5 mins and laughing how small a world it really is [doing the reminiscing about landmarks etc], I asked where she went to school and the one she named is where my oldest sister went to. She asked her name and stopped in her tracks when I told her. It turns out that her older sister used to go to school with mine and they all used to hang out together.
I rang my sister a little later, asking if she remembered the name and she couldnt believe that I had worked with her old friend Clare's little sister for over a year.
When we told the scanner guy about this, Helen and him chatted and they realised that they lived about 200 yards from each other, are about the same age and shared a few mutual friends.
It has been a very strange day today.
Strange because of the bizarre connections that have revealed themselves but sort of reassuring because we are all interconnected in some way, we just have to dig, share and reveal ourselves to each other to find out just how much.
What bizarre and joyous interconnections have you discovered with seemingly complete strangers?
A further addendum:
There is a new woman working in one of the departments that I provide support to, who used to be on 'The Bill' [long running kitchen sink drama cop show in the UK]. It turns out that she played a lesbian who died but in real life dated the guy that was on there, who is now in eastenders. He happens to be the brother of a good friend of my flatmates.
That isnt quite as mindblowing as the main story but just a little tidbit of celebrity gossip really! ;)

I love it when this sort of thing happens - and you take the gold star! My cousin and I were just talking about this, and sharing stories of meeting familiar faces in unexpected places...

I spoke again to Helen this morning and she spoke to her sister last night who remembers me when I was little as she used to come around to our house.

I read a newspaper article yesterday about two twins that had been seperated at birth, and got adopted by different families. That was many years ago. Turns out that they met, were attracted to each other, fell in love, got married and now it's been discovered that they are brother and sister and their marriage has been cancelled.

I will tell you definitely that its a piece of pro-life bollocks propaganda.
link <- the bbc story.
So who is Lord Alton: link
he is a pro-lifer who is concocting a story about of half truths with a twist that pushes it beyond urban myth, to try and get legislation passed that would remove all rights to individuals who donated sperm or eggs.
I will find the response from a judge who said that he had never heard of the story but this would be the kind of thing that would be discussed in legal circles. See how Lord Alton doesn't [and will never] get the judge that he speaks of to come forward to corroborate his alleged story. Because its pure bullshit.

i think this happens more frequently in england.
a quick google search shows that wisconsin alone is about 6,000 sq. miles bigger than england (much smaller population though, obviously), making a stateside version of this story harder to come by. phooey.

In my current job, one of my colleagues went to the same high school as me but was 3 years older. She also lives about a mile away.
Another of my colleagues knows 2 brothers who i both worked with in my very first job. When we had our christmas night our food and drinks were served by 1 of the brothers (and we got a few free drinks too!)
Another of my colleagues used to be friends with one of my friends back in his school days. He grew up about half a mile away from me.
Another of my colleagues is from a town in the highlands of Scotland and went to school with Daisy and Gemma, who you've met Chris.
Another of my colleagues used to be the councillor for the town my girlfriend lived/worked in at the time. He also lived on the street and knew her next door neighbour.

heres one: although, i do agree with madeofoak having lived in south africa, that this country is a better social etc.. environment for these coincidences to occur... we all do similar stuff at similar ages... we all get exposed to similar culture / media and the all stay in roughly the same place... where are we gonna go right? cultured the same way - unless you move or whatever, it's pretty likely to happen... and thus... my story begins!
I moved with my family to south africa when i was 5. When I was 10 we moved back, I saw maybe one friend who knew before we left england to go to south africa through our mum's being old friends, but apart from that, I never met anyone else ever that I could have possibly knocked around with at school before we moved to south africa.
We used to live in Lymington, south of england near to southampton ... when we returned we moved to North Dorset, and I commenced a new life, i adjusted quite well... made friends etc... bla bla grew up etc. Hit 18, got a car, went raving a bit, went through depression, decided to never do anything, worked for a year then thought "id better go to uni now". I decided to attend Plymouth University to do an arts course at the old exeter arts college (so i lived in exeter)... I met a lovely young lady called emma... she was like my dream girl! Exciting, a bit mental, funny but very honestly beautiful and bubbly and cool and great for me.
After about 2 weeks of flirting at parties etc and being student idiots... I found out she was from lymington! and like I could have gone to school with her - my parents knew where her parent's old shoe shop was and my dad used to be a butcher there and could of sold them Butchery stuffs! That was cool ... I then went on to find out that loads of people at my uni were from there and now, i live in brighton, and am still friends with many of them as a kind of extended crew - not really because of the whole 'small world' thing, but just coz were friends and similar sorts... so there you go... 'kind of small world'... cool huh?
i also absolutely love this sort of thing and it's part of why it is (contrary to many people's belief's) well worth getting up in the morning and going outside!
