--> I have a sort of dillema. I have been making techno for the past couple of months and have showed everyone my work even my mom, except for my girlfriend. I dont know if i could ever tell her. She knows or atleast has seen, my midi controllers/interfaces/expensive record players/sweet stereo system. She hasnt seen me make music, because she doesnt live with me, but I would kind of like to share my passions with her, but I am afraid. How does one come out of the electrocloset?
So far I have been playing more and more dance music in the car when we are driving around, and around the house. Maybe one day I will slip in one of my songs. "baby i have to tell you something. Im, Im a ..... this might be tough to take, you should sit down. I am an electronic musician."
Lots of pressure. Anyway, what are your guys thoughts? Have you told your significant others?

Hm. Interesting. How long have you been seeing this girl?

When I was single and dating, I learned not to come right out and tell 'new' people that I made music, because I didn't want to come across as "that guy" who's a musician. I didn't want to be put into the 'musician' category in their heads before they knew anything about me -- and it helped avoid the 'groupie' types who might date people who are musicians because of the 'cool factor' - Now, if you have a decent relationship -- and she likes you for who you are... she'll embrace and support your closeted hobby.

My wife listens to Neil Diamond and ELO, not really into electronica -- but she's supportive of what I do.

how old are you?

sorry if this comes across rude. but i don't get the point.

mulletballet:
no girl ever dated me because i was a musician. you, me, we arent dj sasha. i mean c'mon. most of us just nerds with laptops, who make strange noises.

i missed some words, while typing the last post.
but the words don't miss me.

make a tune with some vocal samples saying "<name>, get on your knees and suck" and slip it into the playlist. When it comes up, casually say "hey, is this song about you?"

looks like you fixed your keyboard tho, yogurtsynth

try starting with the "would you still love me..." game. e.g.
"would you still love me if i was a garbageman?"
"would you still love me if i had no legs?"
and slowly work into "would you still love me if i was an electronic musician?"
then, if she laughs and says no, at least you've got your answer and know to stay in the closet.

true, we're not DJ Sasha, but there are women who hear "musician" and spread their legs. I'm not proud to say it, but hey, free sex.
i know not of this closet.
be who you are.

i don't see the issue here

while the girl is eating something, run it in a full cape and mask (preferibly silver) and start throwing down viciously on your box.

YEAH RIGHT!! for an electronic musician???!?!

you're better off playing a crappy acoustic guitar in highschool.

if you were her would you want to be put through something like that. cause its your passion you forget that most people really don't understand electronic music. imagine something you find stupid, then picture her making you watch her do it

Experience says otherwise, j_chot... ;) Some girls think any musician is a tortured, meaningful soul they'll bond with.

i got out of a long thing this past december and since then i've had three girlfriends that i met through my mypsace music account, yet everytime the subject of music never came up. i don't talk about my music, so apparently its normal for girls to block out the dark truth
