--> So we made it home from the great road trip last Thursday night.

Friday bummed around and did nothing until about 5.00 and then went out to restock the grocery cupboard. When we got home it was pissing with rain and sitting on the road in front of ourt house was a koala. Obviously very thirsty and had got down out of the trees to drink out of puddles. Since the best puddles were in the middle of the road, there he sat not worrying about anything much - especially cars.

I got to do the Steve Irwin thing and picked him up and carried him off the road. (Crikey - look at the claws on that little fella!) No seriously - they have claws on froint and back feet about two inches long that they use for climbing straight up trees. Very Freddy Kruger only times four.

We stuck him round the back of the house and gave him a bowl of water and a pile of gum leaves and there he stayed. Jenny, my wife, rang the parks and wildlife service and the first thing they said was - "Under no circumstances try and pick him up - they can do very serious damage." Oh good.

Anyway - today he sat out the back sleeping. That's basically all koalas do. There's only so much energy in gum leaves. SAo tonight he woke up and we decided to get him back into the tree out the front of the house. "We'll herd him out to the tree," said Jenny. Well there are only so many brain cells you can run off gum leaves as well apparently because they are REALLY DUMB. I mean - dumb animals and all that, but koalas are beyond all that.

It end up with me - yes, you guessed it - picking the Freddy Kruger koala up and lifting it into the tree because it was too stupid to recognise a tree when it saw it. I thought they had evolved to live in trees. How do you evolve to live in trees and then not recognise one when you see it?!?

there should be more em411 wildlife blogs. this is the best thing ive read all day by far!

I held a koala once when I was a kid.

It was uncomfortable for both of us.

welcome home. glad you guys got some rain. i read somewhere that australia was experiencing it's worst drought ever. i have racoons in my yard.. cute but not "koala cute".

i thought koalas were dumb/slow because they ate those leaves that are a natural sedative so they are sorta stoned all the time.

it's the cutest infestation ever!

That's awesome! Very nice of you to help the koala. I am sure if it could understand what happened and say thank you, it would.

I thought the same but I think that's a common misconception. I'm pretty sure applaud is right, there just isn't much energy to be taken from the leaves. Also the leaves are toxic so I'm sure that has something to do with it even though they can digest it fine.

also, WTF koala's. I don't care how dumb or slow they are or how much they can rip me up with their claws. fucking cute.

maybe this one's just 'slower' than most. some people are like that. actually - many people are like that.

koalas are dumb becuase they're so damn cute right?
I mean haveing no natural preditors makes you pretty stupid.

Since I was a kid I have thought koalas are the awesomest animals ever. And now you tell me that they are not smart enough to talk to me and be my friend?
my dreams are shattered.

j_chot: Not only that, I recently read an article about the negative correlation between testicle size and brain size in a type of bats.

hey those koalas can really impale you with their claws. Even something moderately placid looking like kangaroos can disembowel you.

koala's have fingerprints. just as humans do. apparently it's very hard to distinguish between koala fingerprints and human fingerprints. crime fighters must have a terrible time in australia. lol.

anyway, cute story. are you guys in the middle of a drought? maybe keep a bowl of water out for the sleepyhead so that it doesn't wander back out into the street.
