--> So I just got a PadKontrol. It's my first drum controller. I've only played with it for a couple of hours, but it's nice so far - it's much easier to bang out drum tracks on it than on a keyboard. And it's wicked 80s with the red LED, pink lights and white body. Ideally, it should be played in a Crockett style linen suit while drinking a Mai Tai.

It's going to take a bit of setting up, however, and as I was about to go and customize my setup I started thinking that ideally there should be a standard for drum sound placement. The kicks should be in the same place regardless of the software instrument that's being controlled, so that if you get good at drumming using Reason's Redrum, your technique will still be just as good if you switch over to Impulse or whatever. Having toms in a group makes sense for rolls. In fact the PK itself has some specific considerations: do you place commonly rolled sounds (toms, snares) near the touchpad and try and hit them both with one hand, or do it with two? (I'm thinking the latter)

Anyone using pad controllers or MPCs have setups you want to share?

I have the trigger finger, but Im not that creative and haven't been able to play at it's fullest extent. I'm looking for someone to help me the possibilities of drum pads. PadKontrol looks way to cool.

when setting up for my old akai. I would seperate instruments horizontally and samples of each instrument up and down. that way if I ran my fingers towards me down each pad...I'd get simple rolls.

it'd go like

kik snare hat
kik2 snare2 hat2
kik3 snare3 hat3 and so on

can you control the lights independantly? that could be cool for a mini-monome..

There seem to be controls for how the lights display, but i haven't gotten deep into that stuff yet. One of them blinks with the beat, which is nice.

p - that makes sense. I'm starting to think setting up like a little mock drum kit would make sense: kicks, snares and hihats in the first two rows, with toms in the third row and cymbals in the back. That's for drums - I also adapted the included template for "chromatic scale" to work with Dr. Rex so that i can trigger slices with it. You can control pitch with the touchpad, which is neat.

Another key thing I discovered: you can set up pads to NOT be affected by the flam/roll touchpad control. So it would be good to set up hihat, cymbals etc. that way, so you can simultaneously do a roll and hit a hihat or whatever.

theres some vid on youtube where this hiphopproducer is recording a beat he's lpaying on his mpc forgot the name sorry.. What struck me was that he wasn't hitting the pads.. instead he already had his fingers resting on the pads and would just push them instead.

When I used my MPC with Live, I'd often have pad banks C and D mapped to Live controls since I found I was rarely using them for triggering stuff.

Bank C:
Top two rows - Mute On/Off Channel 1-8
Bottom two rows - Record Enable Channels 1-8

Bank D:
Top Row - Play, Stop, Record, Stop all clips
Second Row - Prev. Scene, Next Scene
Bottom Two rows - Clips, Effects, etc..

hmm... I know this thread is old, but I was wondering.. my buddy has the microKontrol, and the pads are complete shit for banging out rythmns, they're great as buttons tho.

does anyone know if these are any better?

I've ordered the PadKontrol and I will be receiving it today.

As far as I know, the PadKontrol pads are very different from the MicroKontrol ones!!! I mean, they're a lot better. But I can confirm you that in about.................... hummmmmmmmmmm...................................... 5 or 6 hours!

Yes, the padkontrol pads are way better than microkontrol's. They don't even compare. microkontrol's pads were more of an afterthought. They perform better and are more sensitive than mpc pads. And thanks to the touchpad, it's the funnest controller i've ever used so far.
