I'm trying to set the record straight on Steve Albini via Wikipedia.
It's my contention that he IS the most 'overrated' producer of all time, essentially a glorified engineer with ties to rock stars and a massive ego.
This all stems from the Albini quotes on all types of music in wikipedia. Have you seen these? Basically amounting to anything not being within his strict definition of process being crap fodder.
This guy is a tool, have you heard his music?
I find it difficult to say all these things without it looking like a personal attack, If you have a wiki account and agree please contribute to this cause.

I would argue that for a lot of the best work that Albini has done (e.g. Nina Nastasia, Nirvana, the Palace/Oldham complex) a 'glorified engineer' is really what the material needs.

Big Black, Rapeman...his guitar tone is bloody.
I could listen to Todd Trainer simply alternate between his snare and kick for an hour, and still be happy.
He's okay in my book.

I was in a band dude, we rocked, so I know how easy it is to sound good.
It's like the line from the Christopher Cross song " the canvas can do miracles just you wait and see"
The appeal with Albini I'd imagine is that you can take an uninspired dimwit and have him perform textbook functions and transmute this lead into gold, It's like anything else I suppose. Like if threw shit in the same spot for a hundred years, eventually people will call that spot a hill or a mountain and it will cease to be a pile of shit.

do you think producers like every band that they work with? the job of a good producer is to make whatever band they are working with sound as good as they can get them to sound, regardless of how good the actual band is. albini has lots of experience. i can't say i like even a small amount of what he's done, but he's surely put his time in and deserves some respect for it.

I dunno, he produced some pretty good records from the beginning of his career, including a few (Surfer Rosa for example) where he was probably the most talented person in the room.
I tend to like his work, but I would definitely entertain the arguments:
"Steve Albini has narrow, rigid, antiquated ideas about what music should be."
or
"Steve Albini has no understanding of the human urge to dance."

You'll never "set the record straight". How can you? Your contention is just that, it's just your opinion & it sounds like you have a grudge or some personal beef against the guy. Many people will agree that he's made some fantastic sounding records. But that doesn't mean anything either because many might say otherwise.Who is right?. If you don't like his methods or opinions well so what? Just do your own thing, go be in a band that "rocks" and don't work with him if you think he sucks so much

calling him the most overrated producer of all time is a bit daft, if you've ever read anything about him you'd know he is an engineer, and tends to only carry out the duties of an engineer during sessions, unless otherwise asked.
