So I know no one really cares, but I'm exited...
Tomorrow I leave for a cool trip to kayak down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. I have been kayaking for a long time and it is one of the places I've always wanted to go. There is a crazy permit system with something like a 12 year waiting list and pretty randomly some guy asked me to do "safety" which is sort of hilarious because, well, I'm not that safe. I will be in the canyon 16 days, paddling as much as 20 miles each day.
I'm taking my video camera and my field recorder to capture the trip, hopefully I will get some nice recordings and to be honest I'm more worried about that stuff getting wet than anything else.
The highlight of the trip will perhaps be near the end when the government is going to simulate a flood and the river goes from a normal 15,000-20,000 CFS to about 40,000 CFS. To put that in perspective, most rivers that people kayak range from 100 to 5000 CFS.
Yeah!
I look forward to being stuck with 9 people I don't know and are about 20 years older than me as well as having to poop in an ammo can.

atum: Yeah, I aim to be careful, mostly I have to look out for not getting giardia from the dirty water, so I have to wash my hands a lot. And I guess chase after people if they fall out of their rafts.
Fredo: From what I understand this particular run isn't as hard for a kayak as a raft but the size of the river should make it exciting!
Infradead: I was really shocked to get asked by this group actually so yeah, its pretty great that I get to go on a private permit. I guess the only drawback to this group is they are all a lot older than me and all rafters aside from one other guy in a kayak. But I'm not about to complain.
Strangus: yep. You have to pack your poop. Picture an ammo can with a toilet seat on it. Actually I think they figured out something a little better.
freqscan: Yeah, I can't wait to see the canyon. I've never been there before, so to see it like this will be fantastic.
Mapmap: you are absolutely right, I think all the sediment that makes the chocolate milk comes from the Little Colorado river. I guess where the two meet half is clear and half is brown, but then the brown wins!
ARG! I still have to pack!

. . .you're traveling downstream.. then they simulate a flood, coming from behind you. . . I wouldnt want to leave anything nasty upstream either!
