--> It seems like surround sound might be interesting for ambient and electronic music. i haven't heard much about this. . . has anybody here bothered authoring a surround sound audio cd/dvd. . . does anybody buy such things or listen to them? it seems like surround sound is mostly the domain of mildly obese couch potatos who watch star wars really loundly every once in while.

i loves me some surround. i've been mixing some soundtrack stuff for a composer in surround and going back to stereo really sucks. there's so much more room and space in 5.1 that things don't feel like they're getting bunched up in the middle. The trick is to not fill all the space, all the time.

yeah, its true. but not alot of people can afford to do surround sound. and its a bit more complicated to set up. i had to do soem surround mixes at school on protools; i dont remember hearing anytthig else about other programs that do it though. im sure there is, but if you wanted to set up a surround sound thing in protools $$$, not just your typical mbox yo.

the hard thing is u need a lot of monitors.
and an interface with at least 6 outs
and software that is pretty friendly to mix in surround.
AND an encorder for the DTS or whatever stream.

with windows media 9, u can encode FOR FREE. let me find link.

so what i've done in the past away from the huge multichannel setup i had in school.
mix to 'surround' with stereo.. faking it.
then encode
then 'test' on a cheep home surround setup. and tweek the mix, 'testing' each rev.

i use digital performer and have an 8 out sound card.

so it sounds like a pain to do. . . which is what electronic music is all about.

the question is if it is worth it or not.. . sober and er. not sober.

another question is more formalistic. is ambient music a "different" experience in surround, or merely an enhanced experience. my feeling is that surround during movies is somewhat of a waste of time. i.e. a monster coming from behind me in the movie theater actually doesn't do anything to my suspension of disbelief. i've already agreed to believe in everything up there on the screen. on the other hand, a musician in back of me and in front of me, that seems like a different kind of thing. definitely a new thing. even music concerts occur on a stage in front of the audience. so i guess i'm also wondering if people think that electronic music might be a new, singular application of surround. if so, shouldn't we push it as far as it can go?

I'm not obese, and I listen to a few surround albums, ie. the recent 5.1 re-releases of old DM albums are truly stunning. I do enjoy Star Wars in surround as well. I prefer to sit beside the rear speakers rather than in front of them however--it's disorieting during a film to have a sound come at you from someplace that is completely not relative to what's on screen. Although, the same could be said for stereo separation. So yeah, I agree with you rrooyyccee, it makes more sense with music.

Check out the 5.1 mix of "Violator" if you can. It's amazing.

i like the new depeche mode 5.1 mixes of music for the masses, violator and speak and spell, and they are comign out with the rest of thier back cattalog of albums too... they do a really good job of mixing in 5.1 i thaught...

i've always wanted to mix my music in surround. it does several things i think... since most people dont have their surround just hooked up to their computer, it makes them sit down on a couch and listen. also it creates a better sense of space, more detail and clarity. this is awesome for electronic music since usualy there are so many differnt layers goign on. lots of room to pan things strangley, like having reverb come out in back with the dry coming out in front... ect. its an exciting world, but somewhat complicated at the moment. wait a decade and it will be so easy to do... or maybe a few decades/.

lawl, tantan, didnt see your post about DM when i posted...

ha! sorry about the obese/starwars/couch comments.
dpeche mode has done it. i'm going to try to listen to a 5.1 system cd soon then.
out of curiousity. . . are the music surrouds piece mixed so that the front is "heavier" or do they distribute the sounds over the front AND back?

everything in the depeche mode releases at least are distributed around.

great minds etc.

yeah I agree the sounds are pretty evenly distributed--that's what I love about the mixes, they really take advantage of the format. At first listen it sounds a little severe (like the hard-panned Beatles mixes), but once you become accustomed to the space between the sounds and the resulting clarity of each it's hard to go back!

any em411'ers have surround cd's or mixes for sale?

i have stuff i did in quad.
but never re-mastered it for stereo or 5.1

quadraphonic JDG. Now that's mildly amusing.
also, I've only considered and not actually "pursued" a surround mix.
When I was thinking about it, the formats/codecs were all changing and my
head exploded. I'm not ready for the project yet.
Still trying to get a good recording set for stereo.
