I've been thinking for weeks and weeks now, pretty much all the time, about making a short film. I've got a story and a little skill with Premier, but I know nothing about anything else about making films.
I'm thinking I need
a) someone to write the script in such a way that it's actually useful to anyone else
b) a storyboard drawing person maybe?
c) a cameraman or two
d) a soundguy (easy enough!)
e) a camera (no idea what - but I'm assuming my Handycam wont work)
f) locations
g) money (arts council?)
h) two old cars
i) lights
j) generator for filming outside, maybe?
h) better laptop than I've got now
j) consumables
k) help with distribution (and an idea of where to actually distribute it to?!?)
l) actors
What am I missing? Except everything?
I've got the time and resources, to a degree - I've got an office, computers, a good list of music and PR contacts but this stuff is all new to me so I dont really even know what I need to get to get this project rolling...

you might want to look into getting an electrician aka one for the lights
also a tripod will come in handy
how will be directing it?
maybe one who's responsible for script continuity
make sure the script is ready as the first thing. then also write some synopsis and stuff (important for applying for funds)
you might want to check how to get enough to eat and drink to the people working there (that's a major point when doing low budget stuff, because the lack of food and beverage can piss poeple off quite easily)
some sort of contracts (so the people will be eligable to get some money once the movie turns out to make some cash)
that'S the few things that just came to my mind.
i guess i missed something.
any hints on the story?

I have a bit of experience with film making and cameras.... its pretty easy to do, but difficult to do properly!!! I used to work with a guy that did a few music videos/wildlife photography/videos and stuff (trying to film dragonflies LOL possibly the hardest thing in the world!!!). I've also filmed live music concerts.
I've done a little camera work/boom operator/sound recordist.... also helped with the lighting, people logistics (getting a few 100 people in a crowd to do whet we wanted, when we wanted) track and dolly setup/operation and camera jib arm setup/operation and stage set up. I was also involved with brainstorming ideas for videos, the storyboarding of ideas (although not very much on the storyboard side) and direction and shot set up. I can also edit too.
The hardest part of the actual filming is recording the sound properly in a variety of situations IMO..... an sm58 or similar standard mic will not do the job. Lighting is tricky to get right if you are new to the process, but certainly do-able with a bit of experimentation. TRIPODS!! you need good strong tripods. A proper monitor to check your footage as you are shooting is very very helpful... but maybe not necessary. You could probably get away without a generator too unless you are filming in the middle of nowhere at night for an extended period of time.... they are big heavy noisy bastards!!! A few car batteries and a transformer could do the trick.
A handycam would not work.... unless you want it to look like it was filmed on a handycam All the stuff you would need can be hired.... I was quite surprised at how cheap it was to hire track/dolly/jib and tripod.... i think it was about 120 quid for 2-3 days from a place in Salford....although we used our own cameras - canon XL2, XM1, XLH1 and either a XHA1 or XHG1 - so i dunno how much they cost to hire.
One thing i wanted to do more of was script writing and generating ideas. Just before I left we were considering doing a horror/chiller on the spooky moors between Huddersfield and Oldham. The guy I worked for and myself used to spend probably a couple hours most days, as were were working on graphic design stuff, tossing ideas back and forth about plot outlines, characters, situations, settings and so forth....which was great fun!!
If you are serious about this I would love to get involved!! I'd love to hear the story and to be able to give some creative input.... if you are after that?

I'll respond to you in an emmail on all of this stuff, I've gotten into DIY filmmaking the past couple years and have looked into many of the same questions. I'm making a short this summer, so all of this is very present in my mind as well.

Haha, you're hired Soft! You've been a great help already mate, thanks so much for the offer of help and support. I may well take you up on that...
yghartsyrt, food is a good one - didn't think of that! Which is weird, cos I'm ALWAYS thinking of food! I'm gonna direct it - I've got all kinds of visions in my mind of how it'll look and sound, so I figure it's easy to do that myself than try and explain every little detail to someone else. I dunno if I'll be GOOD, but I'll try my best!
Its gonna be a love story of sorts. Not a very 'em' type of a film, I don't think, but it's not gonna be like fucking Notting Hill or anything either. Quite gritty, for a love story. Like getting kissed by a pretty girl with sandpaper lips. I'm gonna shoot it on the cams used for 28 days later I think - I loved the look of that film, although I kinda want to record some stuff onto an older looking format (super 8?!?) and yes, even some bits on my Handycam too, where the plot calls for it.

Yeah, I think so, maybe. I dunno what anyone likes apart from me really, it's too tiring to work it out. Everyone who heard that EP that I just put out on the label hated it, but I thought it was ace so....I dunno.

it's more of a general aim than anything theflame...but lately I have really had the urge to just get on with it. I have been doing some audio for a 3d animation (all will be revealed) recently and that has really rekindled it for me. I guess it would probably be some arty wank these days. I made a horror film with a mate when I was 14. It was called "How's that for you Charlie". Was 25 minutes long (edited) and quite good...I reckon. Lots of offal.
Also, I watched a talk by John Walters the other night. Inspiring stuff!! Him and Divine used to buy a newspaper, pick a story and shoot a film about it in a day. He said that the timing of doing stuff like that was amazing cos (for example) you could have a film screened in a cinema before the subject had even been buried. I love that sick fucker!

Oh, I just found it kind of funny how the director is so full of himself when he's living in his parent's basement at 27.
No offense intended.
