I'm trying to figure out how that patch you're using was made. The JP8 crossmod doesn't track harmoniously across the keyboard, yet it kinda sounds like the Steel Drum preset. Did you notice when playing the arpeggiator if sometimes the pattern is broken by lagged notes as you play them? My JP8 does this, so it's useless to try to play the arpegg in realtime. I think I just have one with some problems, though. That patch sounded nice, very chimey.

you sure that this is the video you made? link

Not sure Roger, you're pretty much looking at my sum total experience with real Jupiter 8s there.

We reset the sliders as much as we could before starting playing - don't think its based on a preset.

I'm pretty sure it reset the sequence when I pushed notes - it just appears otherwise as I would trigger
reasonably on time, and the tempo was slow.

it is all true, the jupiter 8 has a little sticker, MAGK INSIDE

the funny thing is that the jupiter 6 and mks80 completely lack this magic. i made the tragic mistake of first buying a jp6, then a mks, then finally jp8. they are not really similar synths. the jupiter 6 is great for gigging because it is roland, metal, and not v.a. the mks80, in my personal opinion, is two cuts below an mks70/jx10/jx8, which have there own kind of magic that the mks does not.

i don't ahve the technical expertise to vouch for the validity of this. . . but. . . when i play the jupiter 8, i am reminded of the quality of sound one gets from very high end compressors, discrete vintage gear. this quality is lacking in my other synths, even expensive modular stuff. for some people this is disappointing because they want raw fatness, which oddly enough the jp8 is always trying to seductively hide.

No kidding. I just bought a Boss CE-300 for the express purpose of making this less obvious. Still, when you suddenly turn that resonance up and it goes all biting, yet liquid on you, I get a stupid grin every time.
I've heard demos here: link where I sometimes can't tell the difference between a rev5 MKS-80 and a JP8 until you get to the demos where the JP8 shows off its filtering capability. That for me is the sweetness, the magick.

From that page I just linked, an example of what I mean:
MKS80 link JP8 link
But then the JP8 goes and does this link
hmmm - I sort of ignored the MKS70 thinking it was some digital wazbox, but it sounds really mint.

I'm considering a JP6 as I can't afford an 8...but now I'm thinking twice. Thing is I promised myself I'd never
buy another rackmount synth (want to force myself to tweak rather than get lazy). The PG800 with MKs70 plus
keyboard might be ok.

I played a MKS80 and MPG80 once and thats what really turned me on to the sound...but the jupiter 8 is obviously sweeter.

fuck. maybe I should just sell my Cwejman and get the 8.

my plan originally was to sell the cwejman and get a jp6 and a nice mono. sheet.

well, I'm lucky enough to know someone who's got a 6, so I could go try it. yeah.

h6a, GAS is torture isn't it? There's lots of other gear I wanted too, but I'd wanted a JP8 so badly for a very long time, and every demo I heard just increased the lust for it. Even after spending the ridiculous money, my JP8 still is in need of servicing because the previous owner had kept it in a closet since 1991, so also consider that vintage maintenance aspect. As well made as they are, I still have dirty button switches, half the voices don't respond to the pitch bender, and I can't use Split mode over DCB. There's alot of zipper noise if you tweak the sliders in realtime too.

I can't really give too much advice on your spending decision since it's mostly subjective, but if you seek out a jupiter 8, know that they perform much better with the MIDI kits. If you go for the MKS80, which has decent MIDI features, the rev3-4's sound more like a JP6 whereas the rev5 will be more like the JX/MKS70 with VCO's. Only the JP6 does the resonant highpass of course, but me personally, I like Yamahas and Korgs for those sounds better. I ended up with a Minikorg 700s I bought from jarvis off this site, but only because I couldn't find a decently priced 800dv.

Anyway, if you do sell your Cwejman, post it here. I remember your demo from a few years ago and it was very tempting for me to get one after hearing your noodling.

re: jp6 and mks80. i do like the sound. i would put forth the opinion however that some of the newer freeware vst's approach it and even have an edge in a way (the jp6 has an envelope issue, the mks80 has a permanent bassboost in the cicruit that is sort of like listening to a cheap stereo with a "BASSBOOSTOVERDRIVE" button on.

GAS is torture indeed ... but my reasons for doing so are to streamline my setup to the bare essentials. but the best essentials.

I should point out I reckon that Arturia excelled themselves with jupiter 8v, its violently good. but I want handsonness...

I loved my JX10. Sadly I didn't have the pg-800 to go with it, but it was still a great sounding synth. It's currently languishing in my parent's loft in Dorset

wtf mate? why not languishing in your bedroom making with the warm waves?

ah, just noticed you're in tokyo. poosnacks that.

...although on further reflection that's probably the best place in the world to buy a Roland synth...
