--> so I've been having fun using my old sony reel to reel to color sounds for use in logic. I've acquired as many small tape recorders as I can...but I decided to look into other boxes to color sound.

I have 2 old samplers (boss sp202 and roland sp808). And have been working to restore them to past glory.

I found a power supply for the 202 and an old smartmedia card at work...and tested it out by recording this.

I played this into logic using drumwerks samples and my axiom...and used the samplers and tape machine to dirty it up a bit. I think it came out pretty well. a little dirty and aged.

the 808 had the "no disk screen" when I turned it on so I think the zip drive is busted. but I found two scsi zips at work that should revamp the machine...we'll see. I also got an old 9100 mac working to convert samples to/from this sampler as the conversion program was last updated in '91 and got the newest operating system for it. I hope I can get it working again.

I haven't used either of these in a while so it's like meeting old friends..anyway back to work.

scuzzy!!!!!!

u should buy my s6000

that would be cool, but I'm, once again, broke as hell. Out of curiousity how much?

Man, you're lucky to have a cache of handy old equipment lying around at work! I stand by old samplers, nothing beats them imo. Although I've never managed to get them interfaced with my computer, so well done on that!

I already owned the samplers, but the extra bits I needed came from work. geting these things to work with new machines is a major bitch (they're all discontinued) luckily the axiom has midi out and so for the os update I should be able to hook it to my intel mac.

I'm with you on old samplers and now that I can use those wth recycle, they should be great.

I'm pretty excited. I also got some small portable square table-like things (great for changing setups fast) that I can sit my gear on...so I get to ditch my old giant workdesk.

the akai $600(0) the last 0 is silent

I got it working finally.

Here's some stuff I was playing tonight.

that's crackly ambient goodness right there, p. i've always been eyeing old reel to reel's on ebay, but never take the plunge. i get the feeling i would just go on a buying spree of old parts and soon be drowning in clutter. what can i say, i'm a minimalist at heart.

i'd love to hear an ep of some of your ambient stuff. got any on ze web?
ive still got a reel to reel i havent used yet- one day ill get it together with my samplers n stuff
im a bit scared of syncing my sequencers to a tape sync track- also not being able to loop bits of previous tracks while writing the next will make things difficult
i could sample a couple of bars (as much as my sampler will allow) of the tape at the right moment probably if i sync my sequencer to the tape and have it send a midi note to trigger the sampling when i reaches the right bar but... it sounds like a pain in the arse

oooooooo nice sound. how did you make that?

i've got a reel to reel i haven't used yet, but i am very into tape for colors.

im hoping to finish hooking my studio up today (we moved recently) and take some pictures and post a blog.

the best thing abput the sp is it's ability to sample long passages. I can just jam to a tape and then sample different chunks. the sampling process is much quicker than setting a track in logic.

ejectorset,
reverse reverb and and tape and tube...and a little compression in logic.

sounds SO nice. i just listened to it again on my monitors instead of the built-in speakers on my computer and its tasty.

tell us more about your setup. is that a tube amp? tube pre?
oldschool studio blog with pics or stfu.

update.
the zip disk died in the sp. I'm looking for a replacement...I've left messages with a couple of companies regarding replacing the zip with a cf card that emulates zip. Hopefully I can do that as that would make this sampler a very stable beast.
