--> Hi all,

I've been away so long, the site didn't remember me anymore. So, what did I miss? (just kidding)

I was wondering if any of you have any experience as writers/critics/journalists in a professional or semi-pro capacity.

I've been doing as much of this as possible in the last four months, and so far I've got to say the perks are amazing but the pay sucks. I write for a local-focussed site, blogTO, as well as on my own site, gitpop [dot] com, where I put up occassional bonus material, as well as other stories that don't have a local focus.

I'm currently thinking of submitting some of my work to other publications to see if I can maybe afford to do less freelance web-work (HTML design, maintenance, SEO, etc.) and concentrate more on chatting with musicians, going to shows, taking live photos and writing about it all, but I'm also not even sure where to begin.

Does any body have any experience they'd like to share, or advice they'd like to give? I'm not exactly sure what my next steps should be, or if I have a hope in hell of doing anything real with this, (I'm not even sure if my writing sucks or not), so any relevant input would be greatly appreciated.

be polite, stay positive about other people's music

why?

i also write for a music magazine, but i don't necessarily feel the urge to "stay positive about other people's music".
i mean: if i can't stand the music, then i write that i can't stand it.
if i get a promo cd full of shitty tunes, i write that i got a promo cd full of shitty tunes.

i don't think that music criticism should be as objective as possible.

but i do try to avoid writing about cds that just aren't my kind of music. like stadium rock or stuff like that.

p.s.:

i <3 gitpop.com

thx 4 the <3, astroboy - and thx 4 the link to the links/discussion, ignatius - i missed out that day

i agree with you on the positivity, astroboy. you get hired to be a critic to have a critical perspective on things, which means you're going to have a subjective opinion. i pissed a lot of people off recently by panning a local guy who's done quite well for himself internationally. but rather than say 'woo-hoo local boy does good' i said what i thought about his show, which had a lot of self-aggrandizing wankery for no good reason.

you want objectivity, read wikipedia. you want to know how people feel about music, read a critic.

but seriously, i'm kind of going nuts writing for a local-focus site. the great majority of their readers don't seem to care about the music content, even when the music team blanketed the site with coverage about Canadian Music Week. it'll be a cold day in hell before a music article hits the most commented/most recommended/most viewed lists, and i feel like my stuff's not reaching its audience. i feel like i've showed up with a laptop for a gig in a country saloon and all the line dancers are looking at me with surly WTF faces. also, i can't write about musicians i want to write about unless there's a direct Toronto connection. grrr.

omg that's funny
