--> Over the last 48 hours, the tinnitus that I suffer in my left ear, has decided to go on a full rampage and I now have constant loud ringing going on.

The effects of this are that I have had nauseating headaches all day, Im stressed and angsty [oh yes, more than the usual ;) ], my eyes have been slow to focus and some things have been blurred [probably a knock on effect of the headaches] and Im at the point where I can really appreciate why some people feel suicidal through suffering tinnitus.

I doubt Im going to sleep well again tonight and will probably only do so when Im completely exhausted.

Im planning to stay off work tomorrow to go to my doctors to get an appointment with an audiologist and look at getting some professional tinnitus retraining therapy based on the Jastreboff model.

I have been reading his book [Tinnitus Retraining Therapy: Implementing the Neurophysiological Model] but I havent really got far enough into it to implement my own course of action - Im actually still on the section that defines tinnitus, hyperacusis, phonophobia and misophonia. [definitions: internal noise not related to external sources or somatosound/sounds made by the body, sensitivity to all sounds, dislike of all sound and dislike of certain sounds, respectively].

On interesting thing I learnt is that tinnitus is not subject to 'beating of tones' when a similar external sound is played to the sufferer of a slightly different frequency.

Through having a search for stuff, relating to what Im reading, I came across this site [linked from the company I brought my custom molded earplugs from].

They sell a laser tool that is meant to have good results in reducing tinnitus and stimulating hearing cell growth. As they put it on their on site,

"The laser beam even penetrates the deeper subcutaneous layers and works as curative bio-stimulation directly on the metabolism in the connective tissue. This leads to rapid regeneration of the hearing cells, stimulation of the immune system, acceleration of cell division and activation of specific defensive molecules."

If this tool actually works [they have clinical studies that seem to suggest - maybe the scientists among us can verify their results?], the possibility of actually recovering some of my hearing loss and reducing the tinnitus I suffer would be incredible and easily worth the £200 for the equipment.

where do u think the tinnitus came from?

Ive noticed that Ive had it on and off for ages from clubbing but it became semi-permanent and more pronounced, specifically in my left ear, after a previous flatmate thought it would be really funny to try and freak me out by jumping in my room, banging a saucepan with a wooden spoon, while I was deep in concentration coding a website.

When I had it after I was out clubbing, it would die out to an unnoticeable level after about 24-48 hours and I would have to be in a very quiet place an concentrate hard to notice it.

Currently, its like I have this constant high pitched ringing going on just behind me left ear. Other effects of it is that I can feel an incredible amount of tension in my shoulders and neck, which probably only contributes to the cyclic nature of it [tinnitus -> stress -> tension -> more tinnitus]

my recipe for calm ears:
alot and alot of water. like stoopid amounts. 6 glasses in the morning, 6 glasses afternoon, 6 glasses evenng.
exercise, very hard exercise.
extra extra sleep, 10+hrs

do that for a few days.. tell me what you think.

The misophonia [or dislike of certain sounds] are things like when Im on the train to work and there is a short burst of bleeping to signify the doors are opening or closing, if the driver [or on the platform] makes an announcement, any kind of chimes in lifts, computer bleeps and OS system noises seem to pierce my ears and hurt. In turn, they make me stressed and that can bring on the tinnitus.

damn, i hate this blog

boo

try the jdg recipe! that's nuts. thats a lot of fucking water.

Interesting info.

I have mild tinnitus and honestly the only thing that helps is not focusing on it and distracting your ears (get a humidifier or white noise machine in your bedroom). Anyway I hope there is a cure on the horizon, I'll probably have a major case from going out often and using headphones in 10 years.
well dont drink that much water all the time! just for a day.

adc - the blog does have a positive upnote at the end though. I could have just posted about what a shitty couple of days Ive had and how Ive almost been in tears and near to screaming, but if that equipment isnt just all hype then Im damn excited to be able to at least have the possibility of recovering some of my hearing loss and killing this tinnitus. Apparently, in Switzerland only where the company is based, you can hire it out for periods of time.

I have had tinnitus for a couple of years now. In both ears, really loud, it never stops. (It's a big reason I got into making EM, because I have more control on the volume.) I use to play in a drum and bass band, and we'd always have the amps cranked. That after year of playing punk rock, and rave parties really took a toll on my ears.
When I first got it, I let it run my life. I quit playing in bands, stopped going to clubs, I got depressed. Then I got to point where I wasn't gonna let it run my life. Now, I have to be extra cautious about my hearing. I have ear plugs on me all the time, I no longer crank the amps to 11. I don't think I have habituated to it, but I am not letting it hold me back from living my life. I think the best thing to do is talk to other people with tinnitus. That helped me the most. Check out the message board at link and get yourself some custom made earplugs. Those make all the difference in the world.

I have got a pair of custom molded earplugs that I pay a substantial pretty penny for from these people: link

They attentuate all frequencies by -15dB and I wear them quite a bit nowdays and my ipod hardly ever. I never used to have the volume that loud on it anyway.

oh fuck sorry to hear.
i have a semi permamnent tinnitus going on for i dunno 16 years now. it got worse over the last two years.
that swiss-machine looks so damn cool. wish it works. and was affordable.

i have no idea, about what doing against tinnitus-peaks. but jdg tipp sounds really reasonable. but i'd really visit some audiologist. and ditch that ipod. really.
i stopped using mine (was also running at half volume max) and it really helped a bit. though communiting really got boring.

hope you get that fixed. and get o the intrnet and your puter. and stuff. spend some days off.

that's really terrible news zanf

have you tried shiatsu? jdg's approach will work i think. this page has some good recommendations.
link
get yourself a good neck and head massage too.
