There's been a lot of debate recently about the feasibility of all consumer media being delivered over the Web, making physical media -- even the very concept of local storage -- obsolete. I've long considered that an impossibility, but if the infrastructure described here is widely implemented, I would change my thinking. Imagine, true reference quality HD downloads in seconds, client access to complex video games, etc. The need for music compression would go away, and electronic distribution would no longer mean shitty bit rates and lossy audio.

In the uk, for this to work, they would have to completely replace the current infrastructure from copper backbone to all fibre optics. BT arent too willing to do it as it will cost [so they estimate] about £20billion and about 15 years ago, we have the whole country dug up to install cable tv [the shortsighted fucking idiots].

it cracks me up that south korea has pretty much 100mbit to every household.

Wow, that's amazing. Yes, there was a thing with Walt Mossberg talking about how the US has to get their broadband up to snuff... link This, of course, is a horse of a different color entirely.

I think they should "shut down the web" with their supercollider like the article says could have happened without the new technology.

the uberweb would still be clogged up with pointless blogs and moronic 'look at me' inanity

yeah, it's funny...the flashier and easier sites and tools are to use, the more they get clogged up with useless crap.
the answer? making new ugly, clunky sites, of course.

primary colors. VERY pretty.

its not being called the uber-web, the name they are calling it is the "Grid". i think it sounds cool.

Funny though that they all but skipped the Higgs boson which just might have a profound impact *everything*. Interesting, still.

Would this represent a move away from using a series of tubes?

cbit, I think so, unfortunately... a further step away from my dream of restoring global communications to pneumatic tubery
