--> the warpage
so jukka asked me about making uk bassline sounds. namely the "warpage".

i have taught countless kids how to make this sound. they call it the "warp"
or "warpage" cos of the wa-wa sound you get. this off beat sound - usually placed
on the 3 of the beat gives you the nice rounded bass line that the niche crew
love. its also a great indicator when your riding bike to get the fuck out of the
way cos when you hear this sound you know the kid driving has no license, insurance,
and is probably high.

its all about the filter envelope in this. i use subtractor in this example
but any synth with square waves and a filter envelope will do.

use two square waves. same tuninig. fairly low. you can try one an octave out
with another but i prefer two the same octave then pitch the whole thing out together.

set the cut off about 1 quarter down, res at zero.
then filter env attack at 1 quarter with amount to full.

amp env should be fast attack and not too much decay - the bass
has to be hard and tight for this type of music.

make a pattern with all the notes on every third semi quaver
so its like kick - w - kick -w
you should be getting the w-w-w- sound now.

now use the lfo to modulate the cutoff. i like weird timings so 6/4 or somethings

you are gonna mess with them. also try modulating the filter with you mod wheel to spice
up you pattern.

don't forget to punch the osc's up an octave for the breakdown.

this music is getting big in the uk check out T2 and all the niche stuff
for the sounds. i helped produce a couple of the bomb the b-lines series
which are pretty much the definative compilations of this genre of northern
dance music.

rave on.

here is the combinator of it for you:

man, my cellphone'll explode when i play this to my gang on the bench

Nice one, thanks.

isn't that like the reese bassline?
Recent blogs: Japan tokyo, kyoto, hokkaido

isn't the reese-bassline more sawish?

nice tutorial ben.

Well i'm not sure what a warpage is, but here's the original reese -

No the reece is what we call a "rolling" bline. Its saw waves all the way.
Very subby and not much movement melodically or in the sound itself.

We are talking UK garage blines "the warpage" is a wa wa sound. that
plays an important rhythmic element against the beat and also carries
the melody often with multiple blines coming in to play.

kik - wa - kik - wa - etc

listen -
this is a local (leeds) more grimey (slowed down) example.

heres Nastee Boi - note the extreme pitching of the bline jumping octaves all the time.
1.44 sees the classic bline sound come in.

heres another random mix i found but its got the bline straight away.

This music is pretty much underground. Until recently it was not supported by the record industry at all.
All records are normally self financed, produced and released by the artists themselves with
labels such as Reflective taking on releases only when they have proved themselves in the clubs.
I saw a mix CD i had recorded on sold on a market stall in Leeds. The use of mobile phones
is the main way to swap and to listen to this music.

It really opened my mind to what can be done with some ideas, a basic pc and lots of editing.
Even if you don't like the music you gotta respect these kids for getting off their arses and doing something.
For me its good to see as we have the usual social problems here in Leeds like any big UK city. These kids
are finding a scene to hang on to thats about creativity and music, not guns and drugs, although there has
been the usual scare stories and Niche actually got closed down for drugs a while ago.

Another club I used to go to in Leeds called Casa Loco has also gone. Its funny hearing kids talk about "Casa's"
tunes when the club itself (one of the homes to this music) has long gone.

you need to remove the "watch" word from the url to get it to embed. but i think you meant this -

you can kind of get a warpy sound with fm synths if you spend ages getting the envelopes and modulator levels right
i will try
i need to make 8 bass sounds on my tx81z for my stfu marseille set- cant do it the way described above (no square wave or filter)

This whole Bassline thing never ceases to amaze me (even the ridulously cheesy vocal tracks) . The best millennial genre imo. (well at least for hearing in "da club")

Btw, thanks for the tuitorial..

Also... what I want to know is where they source all the craptastic other sounds, a lot of these guys use (the strings, orchestral stuff, etc.)

records and mp3s
we were doing mixes with fairly lo fi stuff people had downloaded off the internet.

also old hardcore records

Any chance of a fresh link to that combinator patch again?

Nice tutorial by the way

cool tut... I probably will never need to make this sound but always good to see people posting some good content up here
