--> Unpleasant surprise coming back from a trip this weekend - initially we thought someone had only attempted to break in, but it looks like they succeeded - weirdly all of my gear (including my laptop) is intact but they took a green nylon bag with 20 copies of emulsion - "blue sky objective" (good luck with those!) and my focusrite saffire (which had an emulsion sticker slapped on the side).

My girlfriend got her 2G ipod stolen too - but she's not too upset because it wasn't in great shape anyway.

So if anyone in Chicago comes across my Saffire, or a big pile of unshrinkwrapped, un-promoed Emulsion CD's, let me know!

This was the kick in the ass we needed to go get renter's insurance though - we had been talking about it for a while, and I've been really fortunate in that I've had my gear set up in bedrooms around the city for years and never had anything stolen until now -- and at least it was $400 worth of stuff and not two grand's worth.

weeeeiiiird!

definately get renters insurance. it's soooo cheap. i think i paid like $150/year for $8000 of coverage or something like that. write down the serial #'s & take pictures of the gear.

i'll keep my eyes out for you, i'm always going through all the classifieds for gear here. sucks tho...

odd..

renter's insurance is totally worth it.. i had allstate for along time and it was under $200 for a whole year and that covered all my gear. they do have some kind of pro-sumer gear clause thing where if it's somethign really expensive/esoteric that you have to itemize it and have a separate little policy just for that thing.. so if you have a drawer full of rolex watches or grandma's antique jewelry or something you need to tell them and itemize them.

its great peace of mind though.. if your upstairs neighbor passes out in his tub and floods your apt. to know that you're covered.

That sucks! Like you said, good thing it wasn't worse and they didn't know what was what.

My one suggestion would be to take pics of all of your gear and note serial numbers, etc. In case the insurance company hassles you about reimbursement.

thats crap but it could have been worse!!

quite often people get broken into and they dont take the most expensive things......but thats crackheads for you!

i've never been to chicago... so it wasn't me.

my insurance agent says just take a video or fotos.. and take the serial numbers if possible.. but the photos are the most important.

man, thats some excellent fotoshop work!

that face haunts my nightmares...

i can prove thats not me..
in the foto, there's a bottle of water.. i never drink water. (unless forced by drowning)

I talked to the cop who came by, he said it was the look of a kid or a teenager quick running through the place and grabbing whatever was small and maybe worth something (ipod makes sense) - probably the gear was just too heavy and not worth it. Two more things I realized I lost! the power adaptor for my laptop (sucks) and my x-session controller.

We're making an appointment with state farm shortly. I'm going to break out the digital camera and get pics of everything in the studio, and then get my reciepts and serial numbers together. The cop who came by also said that it's worth getting an additional special "rider" or something like that for music equipment, jewlery, etc - because traditional renters insurance would only cover a part of the value.

So live and learn I suppose... thanks for the support and advice guys!

oh my god that photoshopping was brilliant

omg. i live in the southside and this scares me so much! i need to get insurance.
