--> A somewhat comprehensive list

So I've decided to list what homebrew music apps for the DS i've found and my thoughts.

Nitrotracker
A nifty tracker. I'm still figuring out what does what but its about the best around at the momment for the DS. Sample with the onbaord mic and edit your samples with ease.

Bliptracker
Interesting little step sequencer drum machine. The most interesting part is the ability to load your own samples. Fairly limited but fun to play with.

Protein DScratch
This look absolutely incredible, however my DS won't run it off of my R4DS flash cart.

MIDI Jammer
Haven't tried. Looks very interesting. You need DSMI to use it.

DStep
Step sequencer that can designed to be used with DSMI. Onboard sounds are a bit weak, but its not meant to be used by itself. One of the more fun sequencers I've found. Hopefully at some point they let you assign you own samples to the tracks.

Monome-DS
Monome like interface for the DS. I've not tried it. Another program that you need DSMI to use.

DSMI - Wireless and wired MIDI for the Nintendo DS
This is a wicked idea. To bad its not something I see my self using anytime soon. The fact that it is possible is awesome.
They have several example applications on listed on thier site, I'm unable to try them out as they require a DSMI connection to work
DS MIDI Keyboard v1.2
Kaos DS v1.2
Pulse DS v1.2

Programs support which support DSMI
Nitrotracker
Bliptracker
Monome-DS
Protein DScratch
MIDI Jammer
DStep

DS Sampling Keyboard
Turn your DS into a SK-1. Limited but easy and fun.

Soundcells
Turns the touch pad into something kind of like a guitar's fretboard for lack of a better explanation. It will let you record track and play along with your self. My wife finds it really really annoying, I find it awesome.

Ukulele DS 1.00
Ever want a Ukulele for your DS? Well Pakl has made it happen.

Axe DS
Move the stylus across the touchpad to make music. So easy, so fun. Its only drawback is that onboard music is limited.

Other things that look interesting

Chibitracker is rumored to have been ported to the DS but the ROM has not been released as of yet.

Groovestep
Groovestep
GrooveStep is preloaded with hundreds of sounds and also gives the user the ability to mix existing sounds to create new ones.

Create rich layered grooves with 16 tracks, perfect for Hip-Hop, Techno and other electronic styles.

Song Features:
16 tracks with up to 2 samples per track
Tempo: 30-300 BPM

Pattern Editor features:
Variable pattern length: 1-64 steps
Variable pattern playback speeds: 1x, 2x, 4x

More details to follow.

This one looks like its going to be a lot of fun. The video on the website and the flash demo make this one look really promising. Hopefully updates to the site come fast and steady.

Pixelh8 - Music Tech Pro Performer V1.0
All I know about this one is that it can't get delivered to my house fast enough. Come on Mr Postman!!

Very nice compilation. Thanks!

Holy farking carp. AllThatFall was showing off his DS to me the other day, and this is making me scratch my chin and fondle my wallet once again.

Thanks!

Not homebrew but equally awesome.

thanks for compiling this... can't wait to see what else will be coming out. Now I KNOW I have to get a memory/boot for my DS... STAT.

what exactly do you have to do to run these apps on your ds? will these just run on flash disks or do you have to hack into the ds to make these apps run?
Recent blogs: First gig Blues, Minor news, Fugitive

No hacking involved though you may have to dldi patch em for your particular card.

what i'm using is a link]R4DS[/url] cart with a 2 gig microSD flash card..
if you google R4DS you can find out lots of info about them.. thier site is really not that helpful or well done..

setup is pretty damn easy.. the R4DS cart was $50 off amazon.com.. i have a 4 gig microSD-HC flash card coming but i'm not sure that it will work, not that i need the extra 2 gigs.. with all the apps i liked and three or four games and i still haven't filled more than 25% of the card..

setting it up is uber easy.. USB adaptor and your computer to access the microSD card and copy any ROMs you want to run as well as the firmware for the R4DS.. pop it in your DS and you're good to go.. no need to hack anything.. its a quite elegant set up..
Yeah the R4 automagically patches em on the fly if necessary.

I must get one of those blank DS carts! The mono-me looks the most interesting for me even better if it simulated the midi signals so I can hook it up to max msp!

Many many thanks for all the info & links!

dsSynth?
come on

oh shit i forgot all about that... i even posted shit about it on 8bc..

anyone tried out the virtual monome? that looks pretty interesting and my ds has been gathering dust since i finished professor layton (great, great game, btw.)

It's ok because you are only going to get one note in at a time.. since the NDS's touch screen is not multi touch
