--> just wanted to blab a bit for anyone who cares and also for the chagrin of those who don't.

1. now i'm mixing movies! this is an insane amount of fun mixed with a jackhammer headache that increases in intensity until someone just plain gives up. part of the fun is that i get to work on a screaming quad intel mac with an HD3 protools system with 6 stinking dsps and an actual mixing console-in 5.1 to boot. raw. power.

i maxed out a session at some 180 tracks (with seemingly NO cap on how many verbs and eq's you can add). i am in love. and now, i've done everything you can do for film audio post except for walking foley and recording a live orchestra.

2. partly because of the strain of working more, and just because i've felt a little bottled up, i've started walking my dogs for an hour or so a day and writing a song each time. i thought this would be hard, but it's actually really comfortable. it takes maybe 15 minutes to clear the brain and find a decent idea, another 30 minutes to develop it, and then maybe the last 15 or so to clean it up and prepare for a quick little recording. i've made about 20 little song bits (including a few complete songs) in the past month (had to take off more than a week because of the new job, but i've adjusted again). about 4 or 5 of the songs are pretty cool i think. someday i'll have time to really record them.

i would suggest that everyone do this. it's the most focused study and best brain development thing i've ever done, not just restricted to music. i've even been able to approach some of my long term compositional goals this way.

that is all. i should be working or doing something besides writing this megalomaniacal blog, but it's been a long day.

awesome. stoked for you. mixing movies must be great. you've definitely paid your dues enough to get a nice gig like that. i hope it pans out and gets even better.

i want a dog and a brain to midi recorder... then i could write songs away from gear..

:D

regarding the brain to midi- i actually formed the plan of walksongs by thinking about g2 patches on my walks (which used to be 20 minute walks). it was such a resounding success, that i went for the gusto, tripling the time and working on songwriting. it sure beats listening to music in headphones, getting inspired, and then coming back and starting from scratch. i think you could apply it to anything-theories of astrophysics or writing a novel. the point is that you have no crutches or impediments to aid or hinder your ideas. it's a magical place filled with unicorns and supportive ghosts of presidents.

hey man, that's what the ninner-tents is for: sounding off.

i have been really grappling with refining my writing process as i get too granular on bullshish that never makes it to the final cut. i'm finding it best not to grab the gorilla banana-first.

metaphorically yours,

clawback

song-walks are a great idea. the last time i walked a dog on a regular basis was in high school and i used to practice improvising. cept i did it out loud with whistles, and most probably to the chagrin of my dog.

i'm an editor at heart, and have never been much of a fan of inspiration.

im realizing in my old age that it'd be better to focus on the idea first and make it a lush round thing-all the more to chip away at endlessly later.
