So I've finally finished the MIDIBox64 link based project I started way back in 8/07.
After being dissatisfied with a dozen or so controllers, and due to the lack of quality affordable DJ mixer style ones on the market, I bit the bullet and went the DIY route. Overall it cost around $400 to make (it would of been about $300 if I didn't make several ordering mistakes and splurge on super nice faders). It was by far the largest electronics project I've taken on and have the scars to prove it (aka I wanted to throw it out the window several times). Painful but worth it. I've never felt anything so damn hefty. It consists of 16 knobs, 5 faders, 16 arcade buttons, and 32 MIDI controlled LED buttons.
I plan on using it primarily for "crazy" 4 channel chopped up DJ sets in Live and simple sets in Traktor. I'm also in the midst of making some simple step sequencers for it in Max to take advantage of the fancy led buttons.
Let me know what you think...

Looks awesome. One a scale of 1 to 10 how hard was is to build? I've been looking at this as well but I'm an electronics noob.

Thanks for the kind words. I can't market it due to the restrictions of the Midibox project (though it would kick ass if I had the micro controller knowledge to built crap like this for other peeps and make some money)
It was about a 4 out of 10 for me. I have very little actual electronics knowlege (I've built random kits, bent stuff, etc.), but I know how to follow directions well and troubleshoot. Given that, the Midibox documentation is awesome in some areas and unclear in others, so I ran into a lot of little annoyances. The forum is really good/active.

this really looks decent.
what sort of stepsequencer for max do you have oin mind, given the fact, that the buton don't have visual feedback, or do they have?
congrats on that job.

Thanks. All the leds are MIDI note controlled. I was thinking of creating an acid line sequencer (with the knobs setting 16 steps of pitch, the middle buttons triggering gate, and the bottom setting slide/accent) and a simple x0x drum sequencer (the middle buttons triggering, and the bottom selecting sounds/patterns). If that makes sense.

top work dude. i have been on the edge of moving from bending and simple kit builds to something a bit more adventurous for a while. this is inspirational, even if i am probably of the temprament to actually throw stuff out the window *pats back* wicked!
