Hello emers all,
Time for my monthly cluster performance! This time I did an upbeat little ditty called Friendship Is... The different thing about this performance is that one of the voice is mighty processed to sound like a strange solo instrument. Also, I gated one of the live voices at the climax. But it's still all live to digital. And I shot this one in my kitchen/livingroom, so please take a gander!

that's pretty cool !
prefer this one than the first one. i love the idea of those videos anyway, i think the "homemade" aspect is a delight. don't get the concept stolen ! directors are thieves.
also: i saw your record in a music shop here in marseille, so i thought they had good taste.

ha! Yeah, I did a shoot for a couple of NY-based musicians last week and showed them my Puss cluster and heard from the director afterwards that they want to do one just like it. I know it's going to happen some time, I just hope my album comes out and more folks get to see these videos before it does. Plus, it's not the easiest thing to do actually. You'd be surprised. I mean, not super challenging, but not super easy either. Anyway, thanks for your support, man. And cool about the store in Marseille!

quite endearing video fredo. great song too. i like the processed vocal but think it'll need some eqing and maybe dropped in volume in the final mix whenever that happens.
but it sounds great anyways. once your stuff gets in the hands of some director in hollywood i think we'll all hear your music in our favorite indie movies. oh, your kitchen/living room sounds like a great vocal room.

yes, I got the same critique from another trusted friend about the volume. And the eq'ing... is it just me or is eq'ing super subtle and difficult? I worked over that voice for quite a while trying to get the eq right but totally agree it's off. What do you recommend in the way of db adjustments and eq'ing? I'm really open.
And thanks, btw, ignatius.

i'm not a 100% sure. i know that sometimes the easiest thing to do is just turn it down a little and bring it more up front w/automation. it may not be all up to the EQ. it sounds a little bit like it has a different space than the rest of the song so perhaps it needs a little verb or to share some verb thats on the rest of the tracks (if there is any). or maybe its just panned too far to one side. it's hard to say. it does have a sort of hollow character at times that makes it sound kind of like a wind instrument which is pretty cool but not sure that's what the track 'needs'.
i think it just needs more tweaking to work in the mix... but take all that w/a grain of salt. maybe try a few different mixes and see what works best. being the weirdo i am i'd be tempted to to put a filter on it w/some lfo's sweeping the cuttoff in sync w/the tempo and maybe a touch of panning modulation and have it swirl around underneath everything popping out from time to time.. but don't listen to me.. i have a fantastic knack for doing things to a song that don't appeal to anyone else but myself ;)

ah, yeah... I actually covered each voice with a stero mic and shotgun, but havng this fifth voice with two mics just made the mix so crowded so I took out the stereo mic... Maybe I will add some verb, good idea.
Hahah, your ideas are, of course, amazing! You are such a wizard with sound! I sometimes wish I could have a one on one session with you or jdg or mlbot... or... well there are alot of great audio wizards on em411! Deltasleep. Autistici. Somebody should do a series just visiting and watching different artists work. It would be sure to open my eyes to lots of new creative possibilities.

One of the more frustrating things about digitally-made computer music is not being able to see what the musician is playing and learn how to do it by watching them. It sucks when the person is playing is staring at their screen, with probably tons of interesting and informative stuff on it, and all you see out in the audience is a flat peice of plastic with a glowing apple on it.
Compare to going to see a sax player, drummer, bass player, or guitarist-- or even a pianist if you're sitting behind them. You can watch their fingers and figure out what they're doing. That's one of the things I love most about seeing live shows: I can learn how something is done, in addition to just enjoying the sound of it.
Computer-based performances aren't nearly as "open source" as traditional instrument performances, unless the performer displays their Ableton or whatever screen on a projector.

i love these vids. i wonder if theres a way to do that live, like if you could make the video editing happen on cue somehow and project it on a screen?
