Hey em'ers! It's been forever, but life happens, y'know? I'm really excited to have recently moved and had the means to set up a new space for my music endeavors. One of my first steps here is getting a nice pair of monitors, but I'm on a budget.
I've got about $400 to work with, and am eying the -- and the title really doesn't make this a mystery -- KRK RP-5 powered monitors.
My biggest concern here (aside from room treatment, which I will tackle at some later point), is accurate bass replication. Nothing worse than an over/under-mixed low end. Right now I'm doing most of my mastering/mixing on my Sennheiser HD280's (yeah yeah, I know... "Never mix on headphones") and the results have been very good.
I am looking to get a set of monitors and/or a sub that will recreate what I get from my HD280's. I've been looking at subs, but feel as though a sub is just going to cause me to under-mix bass... Is that a common issue?
So I come to the masters of em411 for some advice. I need some sweet gear, and I need it ASAP! I'm getting tired of not being able to really enjoy my sessions due to being tied down by cords and these ancient HD280's that -- while still sound great -- fall off my head due to a broken headband and duct tape issues.

I'm curious about this too- how much a sub would augment the rp5s.

I've been threating my ears with headphones for almost 2 decades, lately switched to the RP-5s. It's a neverendingly dope experience mixing tracks on those and i'm not yet missing a subbass much.

I own the rp6's and I still need a sub to get those REALLY deep lows where I want.

i've got the little rp5's in a pretty small room. all the bass seems to stay in the rear right corner of the room, my sweet-spot is almost bassless
my advice would be to first get used to the speakes, oiptimize your studio space as good as is gets and then maybe get a subwoofer additionally eventually

i never used them, but i always heard good thing.
i just shelled out some money for the adam a7, not the price-range you are looking for, but they are sounding amazing.
but adam is now is at the moment launching adam a5. maybe they are worth checking out.
i listened to them at the musicmesse frankfurt this year. they sounded really great for a 5"-woofer

i've got the rockit 5s. i double check bass levels with my sennheiser HD280's that i've had for like 4 or 5 years now and i know really well.
someday i will probably add the sub to the rockits.
other than the deep lows not being there i really enjoy the rockit 5s

My wife has the RP-8s. When we bought them, we checked out the 5s... which are definitely decent, but the 8s have really nice bass response.

+1 for adam's. i had the rp5's and upped to a7's a couple of months ago, wouldn't go back.
bass is tricky though, you will not get lots of bass from small woofers, it's just physics. if you think you are hearing loud, accurate, bass repro. from a 5", you are likely hearing accentuated, resonant bass frequencies from your room or even the cabinet itself, imo.
didn't know about the a5's, dangit. :P i'm sure they use that phenomenal ribbon tweeter, and sound just as good as the a7's, with slightly less bass response. well worth the price.
