Oh, man, I LOOOOVE that ending! But to each his own. I can understand your feelings. Some folks think it's a bit sappy. I really feel it to be true though. None of my other recommendations is similar though. I only recently discovered Hawks and Sparrows, by Pasolini. It's really amazing. Quite surreal, funny, disturbing and sad.
Also, I recommend 400 Blows as well. I'm usually not a huge Truffaut fan, but this one really moved me. Also GREAT music.
And if you have a strong stomach, please check out Sweet Movie, which might be one of the most shocking films I have ever seen. And on that note, also see The Idiots, by Lars Von Trier if you already haven't.

licence, again, to each his own. And I think there really is an awkwardness to eXistenZ but somehow it's endearing to me, and I actually watch that movie like once or twice a year. I really enjoy it. Maybe it's the great soundtrack, some of the cinematography or Jennifer Jason Leigh's strange and wonderful performance. But that movie is somehow really comforting to me!

Seen the Sweet Hearafter, i thought it was good and evoked a certain feeling but was lacking in something. I can't remember exactly but wasn't the story unresolved somehow?
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a complete mess imo but maybe that ws the point?
i liked Deadman, Chinatown, Network and Oldboy. I have crumb on dvd but have never watched it in it's entirety (shame on me!)
