I have been so pissed w/ my Mbox (1st gen). Loved it back in 2003, but it works for shit on my macbook. Plus Digidesign does not work well with others. Dirty bastards. I love protools and all, but I really only use it now for premastering.
Running Ableton and Reason through the Mbox gives me constant weird shit. Will record one day, not the next. Blah blah blah. So I got a summer job and made a really fast, off the cuff purchase. I hope I made a wise choice. I got the MOTU 896MK3 that comes out on the 14th. Looks really nice, and MOTU is stable on macs. Plus having 8 mic pres is killer, since I've been using 2 for so long. Now I can actually mic a drumkit nicely.

But it's not out yet, and may be buggy at first. Who knows?? I could have waited for reviews and such, but it was one of those 2:30 am things.
Have you all worked w/ MOTU stuff? What do you think??

Good luck!
Someone had a good motu customer service story - but I'm too lazy to search

I have had both good and bad experience with MOTU, but the bad was like 6 years ago, when the Mac was not doing too well, and since then actually it's been very stable. When I am doing portable recording I use the MOTU Ultralite and it sounds good. Setup was also quite easy as well. You should do really well with your new purchase. Congrats!

just about everyone i know owns a MOTU, mostly ultralites and a few 828s.
PC + Ultralite = Hell.
a well known artist here has had his shit cut out on stage a few times because of chipset issues with PC/Ultralite. He's sold it now and gone back to his trusty M-Audio Quatro rather than buy a Mac.
Mac + Ultralite is smooth as hell. they're a nice box: compact, tons of I/O and a very decent sound. If i was going to turn mac i'd get one.

This new box has to be an improvement on the ultralite, and if you're running it on a mac it should be bugfree.
very keen to hear the reports from PC users when it gets released.

If you get the right firewire chipset (texas instruments), I dont think PC + ultralite = hell. I admit I have only had mine for about 6 months, but I haven't had any drop outs...and even setup went extremely smooth.
The ultralite really is a great little box for the price.
oh btw, this was a replacement for my original Mbox.

holy crap. i had never seen this thing until you brought this up. it looks amazing! nice purchase.
i own a motu 828 mkII and love it to pieces. super stable across multiple software setups and platforms. i've used it with both mac and pc on ableton, cubase, logic, reason, AUlab and garageband and never had a problem. also, the mic pres sound really nice. i wouldn't worry for a second about your buy.

I loooooev my MOTU828 MKII.... period. really nothing else I could say. I would be a saaaaad little panda were I not to own one. The only times I have issues is when I haven't reformatted my harddrive in a while but that is strickly my computers issue.

lil' update. I've been working with this for a few weeks and I fucking love it. Haven't tried the sequencer that came along, but it works very well on my g5 tower (PPC) and macbook (intel) for ableton live and reason ...

I've expressed my grievences for the 828 mkII on PC several times before, but I'm comforted to hear people like using it and the new mk3 on Macs. I'd be interested to hear your opinion of the new one after a few month's use.

Lookit: link I know the mk3 is not in their list, but I was reading elsewhere about people noticing signal loss with MOTU interfaces because of the reasons mentioned at that link.
The Black Lion mod solution itself is worthless though, since you could get a better quality replacement audio interface for less money and less hassle. An RME Fireface or Apogee Rosetta will have proper clock and analog signal chain components, so you really do get what you pay for.
